{"id":75315,"date":"2018-04-30T12:56:59","date_gmt":"2018-04-30T12:56:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/city-analysts-react-to-game-changing-sainsburys-asda-merger\/"},"modified":"2018-04-30T12:56:59","modified_gmt":"2018-04-30T12:56:59","slug":"city-analysts-react-to-game-changing-sainsburys-asda-merger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/city-analysts-react-to-game-changing-sainsburys-asda-merger\/","title":{"rendered":"City analysts react to game-changing Sainsburys-Asda merger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/assets\/uploads\/main-image\/full_width_article_body_image\/sainsburys-open-new-energy-efficient-store-in-kings-lynn-156788731-5ae6d0f0e17d7.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/ftse-100\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">FTSE 100<\/a> has made slight gains on opening, rallying after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/sainsbury-j\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sainsbury<\/a>&#039;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/284904\/sainsburys-says-asda-merger-lead-price-cuts-around-10-per\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed plans<\/a> to merge with Walmart-owned retailer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/asda\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Asda<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shares in the British supermarket chain soared more than 20 per cent after the deal was announced.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts in the City have reacted positively to the deal, indicating it may bring a welcome boost to the struggling UK retail sector.<\/p>\n<p>Calling the merger \u201cgenuinely game-changing\u201d, Spreadex financial analyst Connor Campbell said the move \u201cwould see the green-orange hybrid leapfrog <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/tesco\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Tesco<\/a> as the UKs biggest supermarket in terms of market-share.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/284904\/sainsburys-says-asda-merger-lead-price-cuts-around-10-per\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sainsbury&#039;s shares soar on Asda merger tie-up details promising price cuts<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jasper Lawler, head of research at London Capital Group, said the deal, if agreed to and approved by the Competition and Markets agency, \u201ccould change the landscape of the sector dramatically creating a more powerful rival to market leader Tesco.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David Madden, market analyst at CMC Markets UK also pointed towards the difficulties facing Tesco:<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Sainsburys and Asda are the second and third largest supermarkets in the UK, and should the deal go ahead the new company would knock Tesco off the top spot,&quot; said Madden. &quot;Morrisions, who are already languishing behind in fourth place, would become a distant third in the market share ranking.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/284893\/store-wars-sainsburys-and-asda-mega-merger-heats-up-race\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sainsburys and Asda mega-merger reignites store wars<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the wake of the deals announcement, shares in competitor Tesco fell 3.7 per cent before rallying slightly.
