{"id":74148,"date":"2018-04-23T02:07:53","date_gmt":"2018-04-23T02:07:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/ftse-roundup-uks-blue-chip-index-continues-slow-climb-as-sterling-slumps-3\/"},"modified":"2018-04-23T02:07:53","modified_gmt":"2018-04-23T02:07:53","slug":"ftse-roundup-uks-blue-chip-index-continues-slow-climb-as-sterling-slumps-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/ftse-roundup-uks-blue-chip-index-continues-slow-climb-as-sterling-slumps-3\/","title":{"rendered":"FTSE roundup: UK&#8217;s blue chip index continues slow climb as sterling slumps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/assets\/uploads\/main-image\/full_width_article_body_image\/france-skyscraper-spiderman-479713767-5ada0e4720cef.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The FTSE 100 has continued the slow climb it began at the beginning of this week, closing today at 7,361.56 points compared to last Friday&#039;s 7,264.56.<\/p>\n<p>The blue chip index made gains of 0.44 per cent over the day, buoyed by a weak pound as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/bank-of-england\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Bank of England<\/a>&#039;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/284405\/sterling-improves-bank-england-hawk-saunders-brushes-aside\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Saunders&#039; insistence that he supported an interest rate hike<\/a> failed to stay the slide which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/284385\/sterling-continues-slide-may-interest-rate-hike-bets-shrink\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Carney&#039;s more doveish comments<\/a> caused last night.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;GBP\/USD is under pressure after Mark Carneys comments last night,&quot; explained CMC Markets analyst David Madden.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;In recent months there was a lot of speculation the Bank of England could hike interest rates next month, and in light of Mr Carneys remarks, a rate rise looks less likely now.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Traders are almost evenly divided over whether there will be a rate hike next month. The pound has enjoyed a positive run recently, and we are now seeing some profit-taking.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Tarmac company CRH paved the way for the FTSE 100 risers, as news that it could float its US division caused shares to jump almost four per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Pharma company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/shire\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Shire<\/a>, meanwhile, looked like it needed a shot in the arm despite receiving a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/284417\/takeda-pharmaceutical-announces-improved-offer-shire\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">boosted offer from Japan&#039;s Takeda<\/a>, after Allergan rapidly backed out of the short-lived takeover battle.<\/p>\n<p>Reckitt Benckiser was also dragging the FTSE down, as it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/284381\/reckitt-benckiser-shares-down-even-sales-return-growth\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">announced weaker-than-expected revenues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;First-quarter like-for-like sales rose by two per cent, but analysts were expecting an increase of 2.6 per cent,&quot; explained Madden.<\/p>\n<p>There was takeover news elsewhere in the FTSE, as<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/284418\/ion-has-thrown-down-gauntlet-fidessa-gbp15bn-temenos-loses\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"> Ion Group made a \u00a31.5bn bid <\/a>for Fidessa in the final hours before its deadline to squeeze rival Temenos out of the bidding race.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blockads.fivefilters.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/blockads.fivefilters.org\/acceptable.html\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The FTSE 100 has continued the slow climb it began at the be..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":74149,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[202],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-74148","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.9 -
