{"id":70991,"date":"2018-04-07T15:05:48","date_gmt":"2018-04-07T15:05:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/ftse-100-closes-lower-as-global-markets-struggle-with-trade-war-fears\/"},"modified":"2018-04-07T15:05:48","modified_gmt":"2018-04-07T15:05:48","slug":"ftse-100-closes-lower-as-global-markets-struggle-with-trade-war-fears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/ftse-100-closes-lower-as-global-markets-struggle-with-trade-war-fears\/","title":{"rendered":"FTSE 100 closes lower as global markets struggle with trade war fears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/assets\/uploads\/main-image\/full_width_article_body_image\/britain-markets-stocks-630843168-5ac797d34b0bb.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The FTSE closed in the red today, as fears of a trade war continued to take their toll on markets around the world and US jobs data disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/ftse-100\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">FTSE 100<\/a> index was down over 15 points at 7,183.64, coming off a low of 7,163.11 earlier in the day.<\/p>\n<p>Data on UK productivity this morning showing 0.7 per cent growth did little to lift spirits, as economists concluded that the country still has a lot of catching up to do. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/283496\/london-financial-services-and-several-regional\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">London financial services and manufacturing hubs were blamed for the slowdown in growth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile global markets were impacted as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/283511\/us-created-103000-jobs-march-much-lower-than-expected\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">jobs created in the US during March missed expectations<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/people\/donald-trump\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/283484\/china-fight-at-any-cost-after-tariff-threat\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">upped the ante in a back and forth with China<\/a>, saying he was now mulling an additional $100bn (\u00a371.3bn) of tariffs &quot;in light of China&#039;s unfair retaliation&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Among FTSE 100 companies, there was little share price movement at Dixons Carphone even as its chief executive of the UK and Ireland <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/283498\/dixons-carphone-uk-boss-steps-down-lead-sse-and-innogys-new\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">stepped down to lead a new energy supply business<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/rio-tinto\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Rio Tinto<\/a> led the fallers after it was downgraded by analysts at Exane BNP Paribas, who said they know have a preference for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/bhp-billiton\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">BHP Billiton<\/a> in the mining space. Several stocks in the sector were under pressure due to the centrality of metal in Trump&#039;s trade crusade.<\/p>\n<p>Micro Focus was the biggest riser as it continued a slow recovery from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/282508\/shares-tech-firm-micro-focus-slump-warns-faster-revenue\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a massive slump in its value last month following the CEO&#039;s resignation.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the day, Marks &amp; Spencer and Next led the FTSE 100 fallers following a note by analysts at Citi which downgraded the retailers.
