Aleksandr Kogan, the Cambridge University researcher at the center of Facebook\u2019s data breach allegations, said today he is being used as a \u201cscapegoat\u201d by the social network and Cambridge Analytica, the analytics firm that acquired the data.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe events of the past week have been a total shell shock, and my view is that I\u2019m being basically used as a scapegoat by both Facebook and Cambridge Analytica when\u2026 we thought we were doing something that was really normal,\u201d Kogan told BBC 4\u2019s Today Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were assured by Cambridge Analytica that everything was perfectly legal and within the terms of service,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Cambridge Analytica whistleblower Christopher Wylie last week told the Observer<\/a> that data collected by an app Kogan created was used target voters in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The firm mined the information of about 50 million Facebook users, according to Wylie.<\/p>\n

Cambridge Analytica has claimed Kogan came to the firm with the idea for the app. Kogan denied this, saying the firm approached him.<\/p>\n

Asked whether it was possible the firm used the data to assist Donald Trump\u2019s campaign, Kogan told the BBC: \u201cIt\u2019s certainly possible but \u2026 I truly don\u2019t have any knowledge of that.\u201d He added that his values don\u2019t align with those of the U.S. president.<\/p>\n

Cambridge Analytica has \u201cexaggerated\u201d the accuracy of the data collected, according to Kogan, who said the data was more likely to hurt Trump\u2019s campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the great mistakes I did here was I just didn\u2019t ask enough questions,\u201d Kogan said.<\/p>\n
