{"id":69325,"date":"2018-03-22T00:35:36","date_gmt":"2018-03-22T00:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/europes-data-protection-authorities-eye-facebook-cambridge-analytica-3\/"},"modified":"2018-03-22T00:35:36","modified_gmt":"2018-03-22T00:35:36","slug":"europes-data-protection-authorities-eye-facebook-cambridge-analytica-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/europes-data-protection-authorities-eye-facebook-cambridge-analytica-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Europe\u2019s data protection authorities eye Facebook, Cambridge Analytica"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Facebook and Cambridge Analytica, two companies at the center of allegations of massive misuse of personal data, could face a flurry of investigations and inquiries in Europe as the Continent takes a stricter approach to data protection.<\/p>\n<p>The British Information Commissioner\u2019s Office said Monday that an ongoing investigation into micro-targeting in political campaigning using personal data will include \u201cany new information, statements or evidence that have come to light in recent days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a complex and far reaching investigation for my office and any criminal or civil enforcement actions arising from it will be pursued vigorously,\u201d reads a <a href=\"https:\/\/ico.org.uk\/about-the-ico\/news-and-events\/news-and-blogs\/2018\/03\/ico-statement-investigation-into-data-analytics-for-political-purposes\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> from privacy chief Elizabeth Denham.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/a-time-of-reckoning-for-facebook-and-politics-online\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">under fire amid revelations<\/a> that data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica misused large data sets from Facebook to help politicians, including U.S. President Donald Trump and the U.K. Brexit campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Denham would likely be responsible for imposing measures on the companies if the allegations turn out to be true, because Cambridge Analytica is based in London.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2018\/03\/suspending-cambridge-analytica\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook said<\/a> it suspended Cambridge Analytica\u2019s access to its network over concerns that it had violated the company\u2019s privacy policies by obtaining users\u2019 information without their consent. It added that Cambridge Analytica\u2019s activities do not represent a data breach, because the people using its app gave their consent. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/ca-commercial.com\/news\/cambridge-analytica-responds-facebook-announcement\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a>, Cambridge Analytica said it refutes the allegations, which it said were false, and that it complied with Facebook\u2019s privacy policy.<\/p>\n<p>The social media company and the political consultancy may face other fights across Europe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnforcement of EU data protection rules is the responsibility of data protection authorities. The Commission is in contact with them and calls on them to investigate this case,\u201d the office of EU Justice Commissioner V\u011bra Jourov\u00e1 said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Europe\u2019s data protection authorities are likely to start a joint investigation into the case as parts of the workings of the so-called Article 29 Working Party, though the group\u2019s Austrian chairwoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a rule, personal data cannot be used without the consent of the person concerned. We have strong data protection rules to protect this fundamental right \u2026 The Commission is already in contact with Facebook and Commissioner Jourov\u00e1 will raise the issue with the company on the occasion of her visit to the U.S. this week,\u201d the Commission said.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Jourov\u00e1 is headed for Washington later Monday to sit down with her counterpart, U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, to discuss privacy-related issues.<\/p>\n<p>European Parliament President Antonio Tajani <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/european-parliaments-tajani-wants-facebook-investigation\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> Monday his institution will also \u201cinvestigate fully\u201d the reports of massive misuse of Facebook\u2019s data for political purposes.
