Cambridge Analytica was heavily involved in Donald Trump\u2019s U.S. presidential campaign<\/a>, the boss of the scandal-hit data firm told an undercover reporter.<\/p>\n

In the latest installment of a wide-ranging investigation into the London-based firm<\/a> by Channel 4 News, broadcast in the U.K. Tuesday evening, Alexander Nix said of his work for Trump: \u201cWe did all the research, all the data, all the analytics, all the targeting, we ran all the digital campaign, the television campaign and our data informed all the strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cambridge Analytica suspended Nix as the program aired Tuesday. \u201cMr. Nix\u2019s recent comments secretly recorded by Channel 4 and other allegations do not represent the values or operations of the firm and his suspension reflects the seriousness with which we view this violation,\u201d the company said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The data company was already in the spotlight following reports in the New York Times<\/a> and the Observer<\/a> that it illegally collected Facebook data from roughly 50 million American voters. This information, the newspapers suggested, allowed Cambridge Analytica to target messaging to these voters based on their personal lives and political leanings.<\/p>\n

These allegations will intensify debate in the U.S and across Europe about how policymakers should police the use of data by social media giants. European politicians, in particular, have called for online platforms to take greater responsibility and be more transparent about how they collect and deploy their users\u2019 personal information.<\/p>\n

In the Channel 4 expos\u00e9, Cambridge Analytica claim their work helped Trump to win with a margin of just \u201c40,000 votes\u201d in three states, allowing him victory under the U.S. electoral college system, despite losing the popular vote to Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n

Nix, who said he had met Trump \u201cmany times,\u201d also revealed his company used a self-destructing email system that he said leaves no trace. \u201cNo one knows we have it, and secondly we set our \u2026 emails with a self-destruct timer \u2026 So you send them and after they\u2019ve been read, two hours later, they disappear,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s no evidence, there\u2019s no paper trail, there\u2019s nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Proxy organizations<\/h3>\n

In an interview with Clinton<\/a> filmed in October 2017, Channel 4 News asked about the campaign. \u201cThere was a new kind of campaign that was being run on the other side \u2014 that nobody had ever faced before,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause it wasn\u2019t just all about me. It was about how to suppress voters who were inclined to vote for me. When you have a massive propaganda effort to prevent people from thinking straight, because they\u2019re being flooded with false information and you have people who are searching \u2026 trying to make sense of it. But every search engine, every site they go into is repeating these fabrications. Then yes, it affected the thought processes of voters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clinton said: \u201cSo you\u2019ve got CA, you\u2019ve got the Republican National Committee, which of course has always done data collection and analysis, and you\u2019ve got the Russians. And the real question is how did the Russians know how to target their messages so precisely to undecided voters in Wisconsin or Michigan or Pennsylvania \u2014 that is really the nub of the question. So if they were getting advice from say Cambridge Analytica or someone else about OK here are the 12 voters in this town in Wisconsin \u2014 that\u2019s whose Facebook pages you need to be on to send these messages that indeed would be very disturbing.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the undercover interviews, carried out by a reporter posing as a go-between for a client hoping to get candidates elected in Sri Lanka, Nix was accompanied by Mark Turnbull, managing director of the firm\u2019s political division, and Alex Tayler, the company\u2019s chief data scientist.<\/p>\n

Turnbull was filmed describing how the company could create proxy organizations to feed negative material about opposition candidates on to the internet.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes you can use proxy organizations who are already there,\u201d he said. \u201cYou feed them. They are civil society organizations \u2026 Charities or activist groups, and we use them \u2014 feed them the material and they do the work \u2026 We just put information into the bloodstream to the internet and then watch it grow, give it a little push every now and again over time to watch it take shape. And so this stuff infiltrates the online community and expands but with no branding \u2014 so it\u2019s unattributable, untrackable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s 2020 campaign has no existing contracts with Cambridge Analytica and no plans to work with the firm going forward, a campaign official said Tuesday<\/a>. The official added the data analytics firm only \u201cprovided limited staffing\u201d during the 2016 campaign, and the Trump campaign did not use the firm\u2019s data.<\/p>\n

Cambridge Analytica denies any wrongdoing. The company said in a statement<\/a> Tuesday they have asked Julian Malins QC to conduct a full, independent investigation.<\/p>\n

Regulators respond<\/h3>\n

The U.K. Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham said Monday she intended to investigate the company but on Tuesday said she was still waiting for a warrant to enter the company\u2019s London offices. She told the BBC<\/a> she is also investigating Facebook and has asked social media giant not to pursue its own audit of Cambridge Analytica\u2019s data use.<\/p>\n

European Commissioner for Justice V\u0115ra Jourov\u00e1, who was in Washington Tuesday where she met U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, told Channel 4 News the accusations against Cambridge Analytica were \u201chorrifying.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAction must follow now,\u201d Jourov\u00e1 said, explaining that European data regulators have met to agree a coordinated response and discuss how best to support the U.K. information commissioner. \u201cThis case will also serve to us to explain to Europeans that we need stricter rules, which is the General Data Protection Regulation that comes into force in May.\u201d<\/p>\n
