{"id":69105,"date":"2018-03-20T16:20:15","date_gmt":"2018-03-20T16:20:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/european-parliaments-tajani-wants-facebook-investigation-2\/"},"modified":"2018-03-20T16:20:15","modified_gmt":"2018-03-20T16:20:15","slug":"european-parliaments-tajani-wants-facebook-investigation-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/european-parliaments-tajani-wants-facebook-investigation-2\/","title":{"rendered":"European Parliament\u2019s Tajani wants Facebook investigation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>European Parliament President Antonio Tajani said today the institution will \u201cinvestigate fully\u201d the reports of massive misuse of Facebook\u2019s data for political purposes.<\/p>\n<p>The social media company is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/a-time-of-reckoning-for-facebook-and-politics-online\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">under fire as revelations come out<\/a> that data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica misused large data sets from Facebook to help politicians including U.S. President Donald Trump and the U.K. Brexit campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Tajani <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EP_President\/status\/975683240777453569\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a> the allegations pointed to \u201can unacceptable violation of our citizens\u2019 privacy rights\u201d and \u201cthe European Parliament will investigate fully, calling digital platforms to account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked what the European Parliament would do, the office of the president clarified there was no specific plan yet.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesperson Carlo Corazza said \u201cwe want to know more\u201d about revelations and said the reports, if true, showed social media could pose a \u201cthreat to democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tajani would discuss the issue at the Council of Presidents, a meeting of the most powerful figures in the European Parliament. His office is considering having Facebook and others explain themselves before MEPs during a plenary session.<\/p>\n<p>The European Parliament does not have subpoena powers to force representatives of Facebook, Cambridge Analytica or other firms to testify but it can put political pressure on these companies to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Parliament could work on a resolution that would ask the Commission to look into legislative options.
