{"id":68241,"date":"2018-03-14T02:50:57","date_gmt":"2018-03-14T02:50:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/rt-faces-loss-of-uk-license-over-ex-spys-poisoning\/"},"modified":"2018-03-14T02:50:57","modified_gmt":"2018-03-14T02:50:57","slug":"rt-faces-loss-of-uk-license-over-ex-spys-poisoning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/rt-faces-loss-of-uk-license-over-ex-spys-poisoning\/","title":{"rendered":"RT faces loss of UK license over ex-spy\u2019s poisoning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.K. broadcasting regulator Ofcom could strip RT of its license to operate in the U.K. if authorities confirm Russia was behind the poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal.<\/p>\n<p>Ofcom, which can shut down a TV channel it deems to be not a \u201cfit and proper\u201d holder of a license in the U.K., warned RT (formerly Russia Today) that proof Russia used \u201cunlawful use of force\u201d in the case of Skripal\u2019s poisoning could trigger a formal investigation into the channel\u2019s activity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2018\/mar\/13\/russian-broadcaster-rt-hits-back-at-threat-to-uk-licence\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the Guardian reported<\/a> Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Such an inquiry could result in RT \u2014 which has breached U.K. broadcasting codes 15 times since it began airing \u2014 being banned from operating in the U.K.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have today written to ANO TV Novosti, holder of RT\u2019s U.K. broadcast licences, which is financed from the budget of the Russian Federation,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\/about-ofcom\/latest\/media\/media-releases\/2018\/statement-on-rt-news-channel\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis letter explained that, should the U.K. investigating authorities determine that there was an unlawful use of force by the Russian state against the U.K., we would consider this relevant to our ongoing duty to be satisfied that RT is fit and proper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response, RT complained it was being used as \u201ca sacrificial political pawn\u201d and emphasized that a ban would undermine freedom of the press in the U.K.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe disagree with the position taken by Ofcom,\u201d an RT spokesperson said. \u201cBy linking RT to unrelated matters, Ofcom is conflating its role as a broadcasting regulator with matters of state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May said Monday it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-britain-russia\/uks-may-says-highly-likely-russia-behind-nerve-attack-on-spy-idUSKCN1GO0MS\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201chighly likely\u201d<\/a> Russia was responsible for the chemical attack on Skripal and his daughter Yulia, and gave Moscow until midnight on Tuesday to provide \u201ca convincing explanation\u201d for the incident.<\/p>\n<p>If Russia fails to respond, the U.K. government is expected to announce potential retaliatory measures on Wednesday.
