{"id":66696,"date":"2018-02-28T07:40:22","date_gmt":"2018-02-28T07:40:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/liam-fox-customs-union-a-complete-sellout-of-uks-national-interest-2\/"},"modified":"2018-02-28T07:40:22","modified_gmt":"2018-02-28T07:40:22","slug":"liam-fox-customs-union-a-complete-sellout-of-uks-national-interest-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/liam-fox-customs-union-a-complete-sellout-of-uks-national-interest-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Liam Fox: Customs union \u2018a complete sellout\u2019 of UK\u2019s national interest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON \u2014 Staying in a customs union with the EU after Brexit would be a \u201ccomplete sellout of Britain\u2019s national interests,\u201d Liam Fox will say Tuesday, in a challenge to Labour and rebel Conservative MPs hoping to alter the government\u2019s Brexit course.<\/p>\n<p>With a parliamentary vote on a customs union looming, the international trade secretary will use a speech in London to spell out why the government opposes such an approach \u2014 and issue his strongest attack yet on the policy, which is backed by major U.K. businesses, the Labour party and a number of Tory MPs.<\/p>\n<p>A customs union, Fox will say, would not only limit the U.K.\u2019s ability to reach new trade agreements with non-EU countries \u2014 the cornerstone of the government\u2019s \u201cGlobal Britain\u201d agenda \u2014 but would also leave the U.K. forced to accept \u201cEU trade rules without any say in how they were made\u201d and would limit the U.K.\u2019s international development agenda by blocking efforts to help \u201cthe world\u2019s poorest nations trade their way out of poverty,\u201d he will claim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs rule-takers, without any say in how the rules were made, we would be in a worse position than we are today. It would be a complete sellout of Britain\u2019s national interests,\u201d he will say, according to pre-briefed extracts from his speech to be given at Bloomberg\u2019s London office.<\/p>\n<p>Comparing the position the U.K. would be in to that held by Turkey, which has a form of customs union with the EU, Fox will say that such an arrangement would \u201cremove the bulk of incentives for other countries to enter into comprehensive free-trade agreements with the U.K. if we were unable to alter the rules in whole sectors of our economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. would be negotiating trade deals with non-EU countries \u201cwith one arm tied behind our back,\u201d he will add, saying this would force the government to \u201cforfeit many of the opportunities that would otherwise be available to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fox\u2019s speech comes a day after Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn set out his party\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/jeremy-corbyn-customs-union-rejects-brexit-fantasies-in-bid\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">support for a customs union with the EU<\/a>, arguing that it would \u201censure that there are no tariffs with Europe and help avoid any need for a hard border in Northern Ireland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Labour\u2019s policy shift creates a huge risk for Theresa May\u2019s government, after several Conservative MPs who support as close as possible a relationship with the EU backed an amendment to the Trade Bill, which is due to return to parliament in the coming weeks, which aims to keep the U.K. in a customs union. Labour officials believe that only 10 Tory rebels are needed for the government to be defeated on the amendment.<\/p>\n<p>May is due to set out more details about the government\u2019s plan for the future economic relationship it wants with the EU in a major speech on Friday.
