{"id":66543,"date":"2018-02-27T15:31:04","date_gmt":"2018-02-27T15:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/liam-fox-customs-union-would-be-betrayal-of-brexit-voters\/"},"modified":"2018-02-27T15:31:04","modified_gmt":"2018-02-27T15:31:04","slug":"liam-fox-customs-union-would-be-betrayal-of-brexit-voters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/liam-fox-customs-union-would-be-betrayal-of-brexit-voters\/","title":{"rendered":"Liam Fox: Customs union would be \u2018betrayal\u2019 of Brexit voters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON \u2014 Entering a customs union with the EU after Brexit would be \u201ca betrayal of the voters in the referendum,\u201d the U.K.\u2019s International Trade Secretary Liam Fox said, insisting that Britain must have a \u201cfully independent trade policy\u201d enabling it to strike comprehensive free trade deals with other countries.<\/p>\n<p>In a major speech in London on the U.K.\u2019s future trade, Fox criticized the EU, saying that in many areas of global trade, in particular services and digital industries, it had been \u201cunable to keep pace\u201d with change. Outside the EU, the U.K. would \u201cforge the way for liberalization\u201d of those trade sectors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemaining in a customs union of any type would only make sense if we were to abandon our global ambitions \u2026 tomorrow\u2019s choices would be constrained by today\u2019s status quo,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, despite his criticism of the customs union option, Fox still called for a \u201ctariff-free environment\u201d in trade with the EU and the avoidance of a hard border on the island of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>Confronting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/newsletter\/london-playbook\/politico-london-playbook-let-it-snow-scoop-fox-hunted-brexit-battlelines\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">criticisms from his former top official Martin Donnelly<\/a> that his plan to leave the single market in favor of possible trade deals with non-EU countries amounted to rejecting a three-course meal \u201cfor the promise of a packet of crisps,\u201d Fox said: \u201cIt\u2019s unsurprising that those who spent a lifetime working with the EU would see moving away from the EU as being threatening,\u201d and rejected that the U.K. faced a choice between free trade with the EU and free trade with other countries.<\/p>\n<p>Donnelly spent time working for the EU in Brussels, as well as enjoying long career as a civil servant in London, culminating in becoming permanent secretary of Fox\u2019s own Department for International Trade, a position he left last March.<\/p>\n<p>Fox also urged those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/customs-vote-headache-for-tories\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Conservative MPs backing an amendment to upcoming Brexit legislation<\/a> that would bind the U.K. to seeking a customs union with the EU to wait for Prime Minister Theresa May\u2019s speech on Friday before making a judgement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope they will understand that the drawbacks of a customs union \u2026 would remarkably hinder this country,\u201d he said.
