{"id":62399,"date":"2018-02-06T21:30:36","date_gmt":"2018-02-06T21:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/uk-rules-out-customs-union-after-brexit-2\/"},"modified":"2018-02-06T21:30:36","modified_gmt":"2018-02-06T21:30:36","slug":"uk-rules-out-customs-union-after-brexit-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/uk-rules-out-customs-union-after-brexit-2\/","title":{"rendered":"UK rules out customs union after Brexit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Downing Street has ruled out staying in the EU\u2019s customs union, in what is being seen as a victory for Brexiteers ahead of the start of talks on a post Brexit transition Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>A senior No. 10 source <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/newsletter\/london-playbook\/politico-london-playbook-sunday-night-football-barniers-back-boys-club\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> Sunday evening that any form of a customs union is out of the question, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/liam-fox-no-customs-union-with-eu-after-brexit\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">after<\/a> recent confusion over whether Prime Minister Theresa May would consider staying in it to allow easier trade with the bloc post Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not our policy to stay in the customs union,\u201d the source said. \u201cIt is not our policy to stay in <em>a<\/em> customs union.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.K.\u2019s two proposals were \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/uk-sets-out-brexit-customs-plan\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">set out<\/a> very clearly in the summer,\u201d No. 10 said, with either a \u201ccustoms partnership or a highly streamlined customs arrangement\u201d on the table.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2018\/feb\/04\/cabinet-united-brexit-trade-strategy-amber-rudd-theresa-may-customs-union\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">According<\/a> to the Guardian, the difference between a customs union and a customs arrangement lies in the government\u2019s ability under an arrangement to make trade deals with non-EU countries.<\/p>\n<p>Chair of the Brexit select committee, Labour MP Hilary Benn told the BBC\u2019s Today program, \u201cI wish it was clarity but I don\u2019t think it is. The government is in a state of open disagreement.
