Russia will continue to support Islamic education, which plays a key role in tackling the destructive ideas spread among Muslim youths in the country, President Vladimir Putin said. <\/p>\n

The Russian authorities will \u201cdefinitely support\u201d<\/em> Islamic education through \u201cmajor state universities\u201d<\/em> and other means, the president said during a meeting with the country\u2019s top Muslim clergy in Kazan on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The role of Muslim education among young people is paramount, as there are many problems and harmful ideas in this field, Putin said. Radical groups like Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) have been working to spread their ideology and recruit new members among young people in the Muslim regions of Russia.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese ideas, even destructive ones, can only be tackled in one way \u2013 through other ideas. Those, which are being promoted and taught to the people in the Theological Academy, which was created here [in Kazan] and in other academies and educational institutions\u2026 in Moscow, Ufa and the Caucasus,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n

During the meeting, Putin stressed that \u201ctraditional Islam is an important part of Russia\u2019s cultural code and that the Muslim community is, undoubtedly, a very important part of the Russian multinational population.\u201d<\/em> According to the 2002 census, there were 14.5 million Muslims in Russia, which accounted for around 10 percent of the population.<\/p>\n

Putin also praised the Russian Muslim organizations for their work on the international level. \u201cI think it\u2019s a very interesting area of activity and a very rightful one. It\u2019s no surprise that you\u2019re being addressed for help and support,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n

Among other things, the Russian Muslim organizations stage the annual International Muslim Forum, which brings together Muslim leaders from Europe and elsewhere. \u201cThey hear us; they see how we develop; how good the relations of the Russian Muslims with the country\u2019s authorities are and how we are being supported by our president,\u201d<\/em> Russian Grand Mufti Ravil Gainutdin said.<\/p>\n

According to Gainutdin, Russian Muslims are \u201ca sort of a \u2018soft power\u2019 in promoting our model of development of civil society\u2026 I recently accepted the US ambassador, then his counterpart from Spain. We\u2019re not politicians and diplomats, but we have our own people\u2019s diplomacy \u2013 we talk to them, turning them to our side.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
