If the fake British cards had been used to acquire health care on the Continent, EU countries would have been entitled to bill the U.K.\u2019s National Health Service for the care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis loophole has to be investigated, including actual costs, and closed,\u201d Sarah Wollaston, Tory chair of the health committee in the House of Commons, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sarahwollaston\/status\/952689624299855877?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a>. Jonathan Ashworth, Labour\u2019s shadow health secretary, also told the Sun he\u2019d like an inquiry into the matter.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I strongly support EHIC cards, they bring huge benefits especially for our citizens who want to travel across the EU but have serious health problems. But this loophole has to be investigated, including actual costs, and closed <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SzgwOh2Ova\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/t.co\/SzgwOh2Ova<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sarah Wollaston (@sarahwollaston) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sarahwollaston\/status\/952689624299855877?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">January 14, 2018<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The NHS has already come under fire for failing to recoup costs for EU citizens treated in the U.K.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob Rees-Mogg, a senior conservative MP, pinned the blame on EU bureaucracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs often with an EU scheme, it leaves itself open to fraud,\u201d he told the Sun. \u201cWe should use Brexit to make systems like this much more efficient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under a preliminary agreement after the first round of Brexit talks, the U.K. and EU<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/ehic-euratom-agreements-reached-in-first-round-of-brexit-talks\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"> agreed<\/a> that Brits whose stay in Europe started before the divorce date, or vice versa, should still be eligible for EHIC benefits.
