{"id":60037,"date":"2018-01-21T10:16:42","date_gmt":"2018-01-21T10:16:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/scapa-flow-microplastics-levels-similar-to-forth-and-clyde-4\/"},"modified":"2018-01-21T10:16:42","modified_gmt":"2018-01-21T10:16:42","slug":"scapa-flow-microplastics-levels-similar-to-forth-and-clyde-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/scapa-flow-microplastics-levels-similar-to-forth-and-clyde-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Scapa Flow microplastics levels &#8216;similar to Forth and Clyde&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists have found levels of microplastic pollution on beaches around Scapa Flow in Orkney are similar to those in industrialised areas like the Forth and Clyde.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh took more than 100 sediment samples from 13 beaches on Hoy and the Orkney mainland.<\/p>\n<p>Some plastic is believed to come from clothes which contain polymer fibres.<\/p>\n<p>These are not caught by washing machine filters or at treatment works.<\/p>\n<p>The micro-particles are thought to have been blown up the east coast.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tidal flows<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although more work is needed, researchers say plastic is carried on complex tidal flows through the Pentland Firth, with Scapa Flow acting like a giant sieve capturing the particles.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Mark Hartl, from Heriot-Watt, said: &quot;The fact that a relatively remote island has similar microplastics levels to some of the UK&#039;s most industrialised waterways was unexpected, and points to the ubiquitous nature of microplastics in our water systems.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We need a baseline for all of the UK&#039;s waters, so that we can assess the impact of government policies that aim to reduce marine pollution, such as the microbead ban.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;At present, we only have a patchwork of data from studies in Scotland and comparable North Sea locations.&quot;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Heriot-Watt is increasing its focus on the marine environment as part of its Year of the Sea initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Samples for the study were taken by Jenni Kakkonen, a marine biologist at Orkney Islands Council.<\/p>\n<p>She said: &quot;It&#039;s important we keep an eye on the seas around us through research of this kind.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The sites in Scapa Flow are part of Orkney Islands Council&#039;s sandy shore monitoring programme and during our annual surveys it was easy to collect the 3cm sand core samples for the microplastics project.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It came as a surprise to me as well that there was no significant difference between average particle and fibre concentrations found in the Scapa Flow, Clyde and Firth of Forth.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>A range of government policies have been announced in recent months to reduce plastic in our seas, including a deposit-return scheme for drinks containers and more recently a ban on plastic-stemmed cotton buds in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>The plight of marine creatures killed or injured by plastic was highlighted in 2017 by the BBC&#039;s Planet Earth II series.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blockads.fivefilters.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/blockads.fivefilters.org\/acceptable.html\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-42731407\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Original Article<\/a><\/p>\n<p> [contf] [contfnew]         <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/is3.mzstatic.com\/image\/thumb\/Purple118\/v4\/4c\/2c\/a9\/4c2ca936-441b-0a48-179b-40c734137d04\/source\/175x175bb.jpg\"\/> <\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a><\/h5>\n<p> [contfnewc] [contfnewc]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists have found levels of microplastic pollution on be..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[49],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-60037","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-science"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
