{"id":59754,"date":"2018-01-18T19:42:25","date_gmt":"2018-01-18T19:42:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/spotify-boss-daniel-ek-backs-metoo\/"},"modified":"2018-01-18T19:42:25","modified_gmt":"2018-01-18T19:42:25","slug":"spotify-boss-daniel-ek-backs-metoo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/spotify-boss-daniel-ek-backs-metoo\/","title":{"rendered":"Spotify boss Daniel Ek backs #MeToo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Daniel Ek, CEO of music-streaming service Spotify, has become the first boss of a major tech company to publicly throw his weight behind the #MeToo movement against male abuse of power.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c#MeToo is a real thing,\u201d he told POLITICO\u2019s EU Confidential podcast. \u201cPersonally, I highly recommend and support all the women that are coming forward with these stories and I\u2019m appalled [at] how widespread this is,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s giving me room to think and reflect on the fact that we have a lot to do as men: what kind of work environments and the level of standards we\u2019re setting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ek wants to build on the debate generated by the #MeToo movement to tackle one of the tech sector\u2019s deepest structural problems: male dominance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s so much bullshit being used by people like me [tech CEOs] in terms of saying \u2018oh, well, there\u2019s not enough females in technology so we can\u2019t be gender balanced.\u2019 That\u2019s bullshit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ek said Spotify is on a long-term mission to weed out gender-biased practices in the company. \u201cWe have a lot more work to do,\u201d he said, adding that the company no longer allows gender and age to be listed on job applications.<\/p>\n<p>Women don\u2019t get an equal opportunity to make it in the music world, Ek believes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re part of a project called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theindustryobserver.com.au\/spotify-swedish-hitmaker-max-martin-tackle-gender-equality-equalizer-project\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the Equalizer Project<\/a> that highlights the fact that of the top 100 songs right now only nine are written by females. We are promoting female songwriters and we\u2019re working with Max Martin and many other superstar songwriters and producers to educate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ek said he only realized \u201chow unfair the world is\u201d when he became a father to two daughters.
