(Photo by Callie Lipkin\/Bloomberg via Getty Images)<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/collections\/bloomberg\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Callie Lipkin \/ Bloomberg \/ Getty Images<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In an interview with Trucks.com, the CEO of international truck-maker Navistar said that his company would have more electric trucks on the road than Tesla by 2025.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trucks.com\/2018\/01\/02\/navistar-versus-tesla-electric-trucks\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">CEO Troy Clarke\u2019s claim<\/a> is a bit of a red-delicious-to-granny-smith comparison, though, as his company has, thus far, only announced a medium-duty electric truck and an electric school bus. Tesla, on the other hand, has announced a heavy-duty truck that will theoretically be able to haul <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2017\/11\/teslas-expected-truck-prices-are-much-lower-than-experts-predicted\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">80,000 lbs and travel up to 500 miles on a single charge<\/a>. Navistar, by comparison, has not yet announced a range for its <a href=\"http:\/\/media.navistar.com\/index.php?s=43&amp;item=885\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">medium-duty electric truck<\/a>, though Clarke said (like most medium-duty trucks), Navistar\u2019s electric version would \u201crun short distances and can depot to recharge at the end of the day.\u201d Navistar\u2019s all-electric school bus\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/media.navistar.com\/index.php?s=43&amp;item=898\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the unfortunately-styled \u201cchargE\u201d<\/a>\u2014will have a range exceeding 120 miles.<\/p>\n<p>Beating Tesla on a delivery timetable alone seems like a good way to set up a one-sided competition\u2014the company has <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2017\/10\/production-problems-at-teslapanasonic-gigafactory-may-be-at-an-end\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">notoriously had trouble<\/a> meeting delivery deadlines. Navistar also has significant truck-building resources. The company builds a variety of medium- and heavy-duty trucks, as well as school buses, military-style vehicles, and engines. Its electric vehicle foray benefits from a research-and-development partnership with Volkswagen Truck &amp; Bus. (VW owns 17 percent of Navistar, according to Trucks.com.)<\/p>\n<p>Tesla has promised that its semis will arrive in 2019, but a <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2016\/08\/tesla-losses-grow-but-musk-says-production-goals-will-be-met-by-year-end\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">history of missing deadlines<\/a> might give companies like Navistar the lead time they need to roll out more electric trucks. Navistar says its medium-duty truck and electric school buses will be ready for the commercial market by late 2019 or early 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Both Navistar and Tesla have considerable competition in the electric-truck field. This year, <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2017\/09\/a-proterra-electric-bus-just-drove-1100-miles-on-a-single-charge\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Proterra built an electric bus<\/a> that set a range record at 1,101.2 miles on a single charge. Daimler has already <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2017\/09\/daimler-has-new-electric-trucks-and-a-buyer-for-them-the-united-parcel-service\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">launched a short-haul electric truck<\/a> which it\u2019s supplying to UPS. Cummins, a major <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2017\/08\/ahead-of-tesla-semis-cummins-shows-off-all-electric-powertrain-concept\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">truck engine maker in the US<\/a>, has announced its own all-electric truck cab and electric\/diesel hybrid (Navistar buys diesel Cummins engines for its trucks as well).<\/p>\n<p>Still, when it comes to lowering emissions from a polluting industry, a little friendly competition seems worthwhile.
