Twitter suspended accounts belonging to the far-right group Britain First, shortly after updating its policy on hate speech and \u201cabusive\u201d content.<\/p>\n

The group\u2019s main account as well as those of leader Paul Golding and deputy leader Jayda Fransen were first blocked by Twitter on Monday, according to The Telegraph<\/a>. Golding and Fransen confirmed the suspensions on their own Facebook pages, but did not comment further.<\/p>\n

The social media company also announced<\/a> Monday it would begin enforcing updates to its rules on \u201chateful conduct and abusive behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n

British Minister of State for Digital Matthew Hancock tweeted<\/a> that the account suspensions were a \u201cgood step forward\u201d for Twitter.<\/p>\n

\u201cSocial media companies have more to do to prevent harm on their sites,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Both Fransen and Golding are being investigated<\/a> over speeches made at a Belfast rally in August. Fransen faces charges of \u201cusing threatening, abusive, insulting words or behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n

Britain First attracted international attention last month after U.S. President Donald Trump retweeted videos originally posted by Fransen which sought to depict Muslims as violent and dangerous.<\/p>\n

The president\u2019s retweets sparked a row with British Prime Minister Theresa May, who condemned<\/a> his actions as \u201cwrong\u201d and called Britain First a \u201chateful organization.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump brushed off May\u2019s criticism<\/a>, telling her on Twitter \u201cdon\u2019t focus on me, focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom. We are doing just fine!\u201d<\/p>\n

The White House later said Trump didn\u2019t know<\/a> that the videos were from Britain First when he shared them.<\/p>\n
