Though we\u2019ve strived to avoid spoilng anything major, please note this list includes specific references to <em>Stranger Things 2<\/em>, <em>Mr. Robot<\/em> S3, <em>Master of None<\/em> S2, and<em> Last Week Tonight <\/em>among others.<\/p>\n<p>More and more big players started entering the TV game in 2017: <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2017\/08\/watch-is-the-new-home-for-all-of-facebooks-original-shows-and-videos\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2017\/08\/apple-reportedly-ready-to-spend-1-billion-on-original-content-next-year\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Apple<\/a> began devoting resources to original content, and old media stalwarts such as CBS and <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2017\/09\/disney-is-pulling-star-wars-and-marvel-films-from-netflix\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Disney<\/a> decided a standalone streaming service was worth an investment. The downside of this seemingly imminent TV future is obvious: if you think it\u2019s hard to find a show to talk about at work now, wait &#039;til we all have to subscribe to 15 different services to stay up on the latest darling of TV critics.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the upsides may be worth navigating that headache. There has never been more room and opportunity for a diverse set of creators to get their shot. And that ever-increasing mass of shows to sample means it\u2019s better than ever for fans of certain television niches. Whether you want things that are only teen-focused, tech-focused, or terror-focused, chances are, multiple options exist and a few of them will be well worth a binge-weekend investment.<\/p>\n<p>Around Ars\u2014whether dealing with TV, film, music, books, or something else entirely\u2014we tend to prefer our pop culture with a heavy dose of science and technology involved. So when looking back at the television that stuck with us in 2017, our mind doesn\u2019t necessarily go to the same \u201cbest\u201d shows you may find on lists at Uproxx or EW. Instead, we fondly remember (and recommend) some of the Ars Techn-iest moments on the small screen below in no particular order.<\/p>\n<p>With apologies to Frankie manipulating mom for a new phone on Better Things, <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2017\/07\/better-call-saul-needed-3d-printing-and-an-arduino-to-arm-mike-ehrmantraut\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Better Call Saul<em>&#039;s<\/em><\/a> <em>awesome VFX team, &quot;Pulling a Brockmire,&quot; and<\/em> SNL <em>on &quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jVhlJNJopOQ\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Papyrus<\/a>&quot;<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8TCxE0bWQeQ?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\"><\/iframe>[contfnewc]<figcaption>Dude has serious hops.<\/figcaption><h2>CNN travels back in time to the \u201cdawn\u201d of the Internet<\/h2>\n<p>I didn\u2019t live through most of the decades CNN has given the multi-part documentary treatment to, but I still enjoyed my various trips through The Sixties, The Seventies, and The Eighties (all on Netflix currently). So I couldn\u2019t DVR CNN\u2019s The Nineties documentary fast enough when the network announced it earlier this year\u2014especially since \u201cThe Information Age\u201d stood as one of the topics.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to see Tom Brokaw compare Bill Gates to Holden Caulfield or Connie Chung nudge him to jump over a chair (before the Microsoft CEO walks out), you\u2019re in luck. \u201cThe Information Age\u201d relies heavily on delightfully poorly aged news segments and interviews with tech journalists (such as colleague Steven Levy) to balance three main topics: the impact and mainstream introduction of the Internet, the business battles between Microsoft and all comers (from Netscape to Apple and the <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2010\/09\/the-eternal-antitrust-case-microsoft-versus-the-world\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">US Department of Justice<\/a>), and the immensely important stuff to come just after the decade\u2019s end (like Google starting up or Y2K hysteria). <\/p>\n<p>Folks following the news at the time get a fun nostalgia trip filled with broadcasters in awe of the fact that Bill Clinton and Billy Idol both had e-mail addresses or Oracle\u2019s Larry Ellison making a Nostradamus-like <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2017\/08\/game-of-thrones-has-become-a-cw-show\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Game of Thrones<\/a> allusion well before HBO got into dragons (\u201cSilicon Valley is just one output against the great evil to the North,\u201d Ellison says while flying over in a helicopter). And for folks like me\u2014old enough to remember the sound of a modem, not old enough to remember that Microsoft was once deemed a monopoly\u2014the hour proves quite illuminating. Either way, it\u2019s hard to watch this hour and not come away with a few smirk-worthy moments. (I personally recommend looking for RadioLab\u2019s Robert Krulwich doing broadcast TV on how the porn industry introduced online shopping and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iK6SS8CXYZo\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Gates\u2019 face meeting a pie<\/a> in Belgium.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<figure><figcaption>                       Good rule of thumb for those in the <em>Star Trek: Discovery<\/em> universe: do not mess with Burnham.                    <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbs.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">CBS<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<figure><figcaption>                       We enjoyed spending time on this particular ship so much, we had an entire podcast devoted to <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/arstechnica\/sets\/decrypted-the-expanse-s2\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Expanse<\/em><\/a>. Netflix                                          <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>TV returns to where no one has gone before<\/h2>\n<p>To those of us who seem to stream everything from Battlestar Galactica to Deep Space Nine on the regular, 2017 evidently saw this market opportunity and happily (\/heartily) obliged. <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2017\/11\/star-trek-discovery-just-went-to-its-darkest-place-yet\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Star Trek: Discovery<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2017\/04\/the-new-mst3k-isnt-the-same-show-but-its-same-enough\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Mystery Science Theater 3000<\/a> returned to much fanfare, each by and large delivering the stuff that attracted fans in the first place. And a pair of new \u201chappening on a spacecraft\u201d series\u2014SyFy\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2017\/02\/the-expanse-is-the-badass-epic-space-opera-you-need-right-now\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"> The Expanse <\/a>and Fox\u2019s The Orville\u2014furthered your viewing options whether you prefer jokey or dramatic space. Given the recent news that <a href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/2017\/12\/apple-ronald-d-moore-space-drama-series-1202227584\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ronald Moore has paired up with Apple<\/a> for a future sci-fi project, we may be entering a modern renaissance for spaceship TV fans.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<figure><figcaption>                       This kind of board is likely familiar to any crime TV fan (though if looking closer, the details here are <em>quite<\/em> unusual). Netflix                                          <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<figure><figcaption>                       There&#039;s also a YouTube comedy troupe that does <em>Jackass<\/em>-style pranks, like Dad Pantsing and Baby Farting (of course they&#039;re on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCnVnsusvhqz4SYUXZFhxnKw\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube<\/a>).                                                                    Netflix                                          <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><em>American Vandal: <\/em>The real crime? More people haven\u2019t seen this<\/h2>\n<p>Are you a recovering <em>Serial<\/em>-fan who can still recite holes in the Adnan case from memory? Have you once spent a weekend obsessing over details in things like <em>Making a Murderer<\/em> or <em>The Jinx<\/em>? In 2017, Netflix gave you the greatest genre gift, and its name is <em>American Vandal<\/em>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Calling <em>American Vandal<\/em> a mere parody of the blossoming true-crime style sells this eight-episode series way, way short. To start, it is perhaps the most well-made version of a true crime documentary done by teenagers I\u2019ve ever seen. The main whodunnit is appropriately juvenile yet contains real stakes. The evidence collection taps into the ABP (always be posting) nature of a high schooler today. And the meticulous attention to detail\u2014computer model recreations of house-party conversations; extensive YouTube research on one suspect\u2019s failed <em>Jackass<\/em>-like video troupe\u2014feels pitch-perfect as the passion project of some A\/V club nerd with technical skills and time to kill.<\/p>\n<p>That alone would be a worthy watch filled with plenty of genre in-jokes and over-the-top moments done in an extremely somber (and therefore hilarious) tone. But <em>American Vandal<\/em> sneaks in layers of story and meaning its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=m3tkFOtM6go\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">trailer<\/a> doesn\u2019t even begin to hint at. I know folks went nuts over teen dramas such as <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2017\/11\/runaways-is-the-best-new-tv-series-you-probably-missed\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Runaways<\/em><\/a> or <em>13 Reasons Why<\/em> in 2017, but by season\u2019s end there may be no better glimpse at the psyche and unique social dynamics of modern-day high school than <em>American Vandal<\/em>. And somehow on top of that, this series manages to also incorporate smart commentary on the continuing blurry line between life and content, the \u201calways on\u201d nature of the social media age.
