CNN called Thomas the Tank Engine <\/em>and Paw Patrol <\/em>\u201cfascist cartoons\u201d in an article on Friday, days before children around the globe will find toys from the popular shows under the Christmas tree.<\/h2>\n

In the article<\/a>, titled \u201cWhy kids love \u2018fascist\u2019 cartoons like \u2018Paw Patrol\u2019 and \u2018Thomas,'\u201d CNN contributor Elissa Strauss claimed children are \u201cdrawn to worlds in which identities are fixed, order trumps imagination and transgressions are met with routine punishment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis clash between what parents desire for their children and what children desire for themselves is most easily observable in cartoon preferences. So often, the more parents dislike a show, the more their children love it,\u201d Strauss claimed. \u201c\u2018Thomas,\u2019 the long-running television franchise about a group of working trains chugging away on the Island of Sodor, has been called a \u2018premodern corporate-totalitarian dystopia\u2019 in the New Yorker<\/em>, imperialist and sinister in Slate, and classist, sexist and anti-environmentalist in the Guardian. And yet people \u2014presumably parents \u2014 spend $1 billion on \u2018Thomas\u2019 merchandise every year.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Paw Patrol\u2019 is equally polarizing. The show, about a group of rescue dogs led by a boy named Ryder, is a regular source of complaint among parents and of adoration among their kids,\u201d she continued. \u201cBuzzfeed called the show \u2018terrible\u2019 and pointed to instances of gender and social inequality that go unchecked on the show. In the Guardian, Ryder is described as a megalomaniac with an implied \u2018unstoppable God complex.\u2019 Nevertheless, \u2018Paw Patrol\u2019 is ubiquitous. Branded merchandise featuring Ryder and the gang outsells most other television shows, according to recent data from the Licensing Industry Merchandisers\u2019 Association.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her article, Strauss added, however, that though, \u201cIt\u2019s tempting as a parent \u2014 especially those of us who are aghast at contemporary politics \u2014 to be disturbed by the notion of our children tuning in for a regular dose of primary-colored authoritarianism,\u201d it is natural because \u201cchildren take comfort in the idea that someone is in charge.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo them, Ryder isn\u2019t a megalomaniac, and Sir Topham Hatt of \u2018Thomas\u2019 isn\u2019t a neocolonial autocrat. They\u2019re just the guys delegating responsibilities to their eager inferiors,\u201d she proclaimed. \u201cAnd the fact that these leaders, both white males, look like most figures in a position of authority in the real world is not lost on children.\u201d<\/p>\n
