This year saw an endless stream of grim sexual harassment scandals rock Hollywood and the political establishment.<\/p>\n

But some Silicon Valley firms don\u2019t appear to have learned from the hashtags<\/a>, revelations<\/a> and witchhunts<\/a> of 2017.<\/p>\n

Most of the engineers who work in the Valley\u2019s tech industry are men, which often means that parties can end being a little too blokey.<\/p>\n

Which is why big companies often pay beautiful women to mingle at events.<\/p>\n

Now Bloomberg has claimed there is record-breaking demand for modelling agencies\u2019 services<\/a> \u2013 a revelation that has sparked a firestorm of criticism from feminists and a flurry of virtue signalling from their allies.<\/p>\n

Cindy Gallop, a world famous advertising guru and passionate gender equality campaigner, tweeted: \u2018At a time when we\u2019re trying to end sexual harassment and lack of gender-equality, this ISN\u2019T HELPING, Silicon Valley.\u2019<\/p>\n

Big companies including \u2018one of the largest search engines in the world\u2019 pay between $50 and $200 (\u00a337 and \u00a3149) to hire \u2018ambience and atmosphere models\u2019.<\/p>\n

One modelling agency said it frequently turned down pervy requests for models to wear short skirts, cleavage-baring dresses and even pink latex body suits.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, women are told to pretend to be genuine guests and refuse to hand out their contact details.<\/p>\n

Another of the agencies Bloomberg spoke to is called Cre8, which discussed how it sent 25 attractive men and women and to hang out a party held by a gaming firm that was \u2018pretty much all men\u2019.<\/p>\n

The firm\u2019s president, Farnaz Kermaani, personally checks out companies before agreeing to send her models along.<\/p>\n

She said: \u2018If somebody is creepy toward me, and I\u2019m the owner of the company, I can guarantee they\u2019ll be creepy to the models. Silicon Valley doesn\u2019t have the best reputation.\u2019<\/p>\n

In the year when #metoo lit up the internet and a tsunami of allegations washed Harvey Weinstein out of Hollywood, the exposure of tech firms\u2019 love of models provoked a predictable outpouring of anger.<\/p>\n

On Twitter, the science writer Erin Baba sarcastically wrote: \u2018Nah, Silicon Valley isn\u2019t sexist. They don\u2019t have a women problem at all. Nope. They\u2019re great. They treat women super equally.\u2019<\/p>\n

Tech entrepreneur Azeem Azhar advised the world to \u2018set creepy level to high\u2019 whilst Amie Stepanovich, US policy manager at the digital right firm Access Now, said the revelations were \u2018 so, so, so, so gross\u2019.<\/p>\n

Will Oremus, senior technology writer at Slate, added: \u2018Any company doing this should be maximally shamed.\u2019<\/p>\n
