Students at the prestigious Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, are participating a workshop to help them \u201cdeconstruct whiteness.\u201d<\/h2>\n

The six-part workshop, which is only open to students who \u201cself-identify\u201d as white, is designed<\/a> to help students understand what concepts like \u201cwhiteness\u201d and \u201cwhite guilt\u201d actually mean. \u201cWhiteness\u201d is defined<\/a> by the University of Calgary as \u201ca dominant cultural space with enormous political significance, with the purpose to keep others on the margin.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhite people are not required to explain to others how \u2018white\u2019 culture works, because \u2018white\u2019 culture is the dominant culture that sets the norms,\u201d the definition continues. \u201cEverybody else is then compared to that norm\u2026 In times of perceived threat, the normative group may well attempt to reassert its normativity by asserting elements of its cultural practice more explicitly and exclusively.\u201d \u201d<\/p>\n

Several members of the Northwestern community are embracing the program with open arms. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of space on this campus for conversations to happen around issues of privilege and specifically around issues of white privilege,\u201d said Michele Enos, assistant director of Northwestern\u2019s Social Justice Education office.<\/p>\n

Northwestern spokesperson Bob Rowley told The College Fix that the \u201cDeconstructing Whiteness\u201d workshop is a part of the university\u2019s efforts to bring learning opportunities to its students. \u201cIt\u2019s part of Northwestern\u2019s Social Justice Education effort to create learning opportunities for our students,\u201d Rowley said.<\/p>\n

A poster for the event lists hypothetical questions that interested students might ask themselves. \u201cWhy do I feel guilty about being white?\u201d one reads. \u201cHow do I talk about race as a white person?\u201d reads another.<\/p>\n

In October 2016, Breitbart News reported<\/a> that Northwestern announced that they would quadruple safe spaces for black students after complaints were filed with the administration. In May 2017, Breitbart News reported<\/a> that Northwestern students who interrupted a guest speaker event featuring an ICE official would be disciplined by the university.<\/p>\n

Northwestern University\u2019s full-time undergraduate tuition is more than $52,000 a year.<\/p>\n
