{"id":222329,"date":"2022-03-29T16:00:36","date_gmt":"2022-03-29T16:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/?p=222329"},"modified":"2022-03-29T10:00:12","modified_gmt":"2022-03-29T10:00:12","slug":"trade-deficit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/trade-deficit\/","title":{"rendered":"US: Goods trade deficit near all-time high"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>London, (Business News Report)|| <\/strong>The US merchandise trade deficit remained close to an all-time high, although it declined in February.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The trade deficit is expected to have a negative impact on economic growth in the first quarter of this year in the United States.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">According to the US Department of Commerce, the merchandise trade deficit decreased during the month of February by 0.9% to reach $106.6 billion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The goods trade deficit hit an all-time high of $107.6 billion in January, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The US Department of Commerce stated that exports rose by 1.2 percent to $157.2 billion, covering a 0.3 percent increase in imports to $263.7 billion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The recovery in exports was driven by a 6.3% increase in shipments of consumer goods, according to the American magazine Forbes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.gov\/\">US Department of Commerce<\/a> added that food exports rose by 3.6 percent, and industrial supplies increased by 2.6 percent, but automobile exports declined by 3.4 percent as production continued to be hampered by the global shortage of semiconductors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">There has also been a significant drop in exports of capital and other goods, according to the US Department of Commerce.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">According to official data, imports of goods increased by 0.3 percent to $263.7 billion, but it was curbed by a 9.9 percent decrease in car imports, in addition to a 3.0 percent decrease in food imports.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The data shows significant increases in imports of industrial supplies, and imports of capital goods, as well as consumer goods, rose.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">While companies continued to replenish stocks in February, the pace was lower than in the final months of 2021.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Inventories of wholesale companies rose by 2.1 percent, after rising by 1.1 percent in January, and retail inventories rose by 1.1 percent in February, after rising by 1.9 percent in the previous month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Automobile inventories also increased by 0.9 percent after rising 2.5 percent in January, and excluding automobiles, retail inventories increased by 1.2 percent , after accelerating by 1.7 percent in January.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The inventory component is included in the calculation of GDP growth, as the pace of investment in inventory accelerated at a strong seasonally adjusted annual rate of $171.2 billion in the fourth quarter, which contributed 4.90 percent to the pace of growth in the fourth quarter by 7 percent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Despite the rise in February, inventories are likely to be neutral to GDP growth this first quarter of 2022, as they will need to increase at a rapid rate similar to the fourth quarter to contribute to growth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Estimated GDP growth for the first quarter of 2022 was less than 1 percent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On Tuesday, the US department will publish the comprehensive trade report for the month of February, which includes data for countries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>London, (Business News Report)|| The US merchandise trade deficit remained close to an all-time high, although it declined in February.
