{"id":199079,"date":"2021-06-16T21:35:40","date_gmt":"2021-06-16T21:35:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/?p=199079"},"modified":"2021-06-16T21:35:43","modified_gmt":"2021-06-16T21:35:43","slug":"ikea-spying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/ikea-spying\/","title":{"rendered":"France fines IKEA $1.2 million for spying on employees"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A French court has imposed a large fine on the Swedish furniture giant IKEA amounting to one million euros ($1.2 million) for\u00a0spying improperly gathering and storing data about its employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The French branch of Ingka Group, which owns most Ikea stores worldwide, was accused of spying &nbsp;on its workers and some clients over several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2012, the case emerged after Le Canard Enchaine newspaper revealed that a private company was used by IKEA\u2019s security department to spy on employees and customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2003, the company has been collecting personal information about employees and job applicants, including their banking activities and potential criminal charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar information have also been collected about customers whenever they entered legal proceedings with the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This prompted the \u201cGeneral Confederation of Labor &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Workers%27_Force\">Workers&#8217; Force<\/a>\u201d to file a lawsuit over the improper use of personal data against the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In turn, the main IKEA headquarters in Sweden denied spying claims, while the French branch responded with an internal audit and reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company was proven to have used inappropriate and even deceptive practices to collect data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the company denied spying on anyone, it fired four French executives after French prosecutors opened a criminal investigation in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the accusations indicated that \u201cIKEA \u2013 France\u201d has used unauthorized data to try to file an arrest warren against an employee who demanded unemployment benefits while owning a Porsche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IKEA is a multinational company that designs and sells ready-to-assemble furniture, kitchenware, home accessories, and sometimes many other useful goods and home services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded in Sweden in 1943, IKEA has been the world&#8217;s largest furniture retailer since 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The furniture manufactured by IKEA are known for their modern designs eco-friendly simplicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the Swedish company is known for its attention to cost control, operational details and continuous product development.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A French court has imposed a large fine on the Swedish furniture giant IKEA amounting to one million euros ($1.2 million) for\u00a0spying improperly gathering and storing data about its employees.
