{"id":199074,"date":"2021-06-16T18:17:16","date_gmt":"2021-06-16T18:17:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/?p=199074"},"modified":"2021-06-16T18:17:18","modified_gmt":"2021-06-16T18:17:18","slug":"us-bonds-and-treasury-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/us-bonds-and-treasury-bills\/","title":{"rendered":"Foreign holdings of US bonds and treasury bills exceed $7 trillion in April"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Foreign holdings of US bonds and treasury bills have increased during April, as investors returned to buying US government debt after yields started to decline from their pervious high levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiBzJOO4ZzxAhXC_7sIHQuLDqUQFjAAegQIAxAD&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fhome.treasury.gov%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw0ZSIcF1gq6SpqmT_6_iCip\">Department of the Treasury<\/a>, foreign holdings of US bonds and treasury bills amounted to $7.070 trillion in April, up from $7.028 trillion in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japan, the largest holder of US sovereign securities, led the way, raising its holdings to $1.276 trillion in April from $1.24 trillion in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, China&#8217;s holdings fell to $1.069 trillion from $1.1 trillion in March. Its holdings have declined for the last two consecutive months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The data indicated that foreigners bought $49.57 billion in treasury bills and bonds in April, after pumping record inflows of $118.87 billion in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The data also showed that US corporate bonds drew $10.14 billion in inflows in April, down from $43.1 billion in March, which was the largest since May 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Foreign investment in china<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said the volume of foreign direct investment in actual use on the Chinese mainland reached 481 billion yuan (about $75.3 billion) during the first five months of this year, up 35.4% year on year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ministry added that the registered volume increased by 30.3%, compared to the same period in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Foreign investment in the service industry registered 381.9 billion yuan during the cited period, up 41.6% year on year, while foreign investment in the high-tech service industry registered a rise of 37.6%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the period between January and May, the volume of foreign investment from countries participating in the &#8220;Belt and Road&#8221; initiative increased by 54.1%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, the volume of foreign investment from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union increased by 56% and 16.8%, respectively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Foreign holdings of US bonds and treasury bills have increased during April, as investors returned to buying US government debt after yields started to decline from their pervious high levels.
