The rise of more than 20%,\u202fwiped out two decades of education gains, the agency said.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UNESCO is preparing to invite education ministers around the world to participate in a meeting on Monday, March 29, under the title \u201cOne year into COVID: Prioritizing education recovery to avoid a generational catastrophe\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To tackle what UNESCO has called a potential \u201cgenerational catastrophe\u201d, it is calling for \u201creopening schools and supporting teachers; mitigating drop-out and learning losses; and accelerating the digital transformation\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report said that since the beginning of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coronavirus<\/a>&nbsp;pandemic, complete or\u202fpartial\u202fclosures have disrupted schooling for an average of 25 weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The highest learning losses projected to be in\u202fthe\u202fLatin America and Caribbean\u202fregion, and\u202fin\u202fCentral and Southern Asia.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Projections indicate that learning loss rates will be highest in Latin America and the Caribbean, and in Central and South Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UNESCO report concludes that recovery could occur by 2024 \u201cif exceptional efforts are\u202fmade\u202fto\u202fprovide\u202fremedial\u202fclasses\u202fand catch-up strategies\u201d.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a quarter of students are benefiting from\u202fremedial education, according to new data from a\u202fjoint survey conducted by UNESCO and the UN Children\u2019s Fund (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNICEF<\/a>).\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schools remain closed in 30 countries, affecting some 165 million students.
