{"id":190118,"date":"2021-03-22T07:00:47","date_gmt":"2021-03-22T07:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/?p=190118"},"modified":"2021-03-22T07:00:51","modified_gmt":"2021-03-22T07:00:51","slug":"minimum-wage-qatar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/minimum-wage-qatar\/","title":{"rendered":"minimum wage law extends to all workers in Qatar"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A minimum wage of $275 a month came into force for all workers in Qatar Saturday, Qatar News Agency reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The minimum became mandatory for all newly signed contracts from August 30, and will now also be compulsory for existing employment agreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Qatar is the first country in the region to adopt a non-discriminatory minimum wage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new legislation ensures all employees receive a minimum monthly wage of 1,000 Qatari riyals ($275).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition the law ensures a minimum allowance of 300 riyals for food and 500 riyals for housing, unless their employer provides both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Non-discriminatory<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cQatar is the first country in the region to introduce a non-discriminatory minimum wage, which is part of a series of historical reforms of the country\u2019s labour laws,\u201d the International Labor Organization (ILO) said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMore than 400,000 workers or 20 percent of the private sector will benefit directly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Qatar Government Communication Office, more than 5,000 companies have already updated their payroll systems to adhere to the new legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The state-run Qatar News Agency reported that the Labour Ministry had &#8220;announced implementation of new minimum wage for all workers starting Saturday&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis wage increase will also improve the lives of a large number of family members in the workers\u2019 countries of origin who rely on the remittances sent every month,\u201d said Max Tu\u00f1\u00f3n from the ILO Project Office in Qatar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Labor Ministry has said the changes will &#8220;boost investment in the local economy and drive economic growth&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Qatar\u2019s Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs has implemented a series of labour reforms in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since it was awarded the hosting of football\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/events\/qatar-2022.html\">2022 World Cup&nbsp;<\/a>in 2010, Qatar\u2019s treatment of migrant workers has been under the spotlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In August 2020, Qatar scrapped a rule requiring employers\u2019 consent to change jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read more:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/remote-workers\/\"> UAE approves new system to attract remote workers<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A minimum wage of $275 a month came into force for all workers in Qatar Saturday, Qatar News Agency reported.
