{"id":188581,"date":"2021-02-28T08:17:03","date_gmt":"2021-02-28T08:17:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/?p=188581"},"modified":"2021-02-28T08:17:06","modified_gmt":"2021-02-28T08:17:06","slug":"tunisias-gdp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/tunisias-gdp\/","title":{"rendered":"IMF expects Tunisia&#8217;s GDP growth to recover this year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/News\/Articles\/2021\/02\/26\/pr2152-tunisia-imf-executive-board-concludes-2021-article-iv-consultation-with-tunisia\">forecasted<\/a> Tunisia&#8217;s GDP growth to recover by 3.8% in 2021 as the pandemic begins to recede.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IMF urged Tunisia to reduce the wage bill and reduce energy subsidies to reduce the fiscal deficit. This puts more pressure on the fragile government while the country suffers a severe financial and political crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the COVID-19 pandemic and internal political conflict between the main players, continuous protests have rocked Tunisia since last month due to social inequality and demanding jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tunisia&#8217;s GDP growth 2021<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tunisia is experiencing unprecedented economic hardship, with a fiscal deficit of 11.5% of GDP in 2020 and an economic contraction of 8.8%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IMF said the monetary policy should focus on inflation by directing short-term interest rates, while maintaining exchange rate flexibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tunisia&#8217;s 2021 budget expects borrowing to reach $7.2 billion, including about $5 billion in foreign loans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The debts repayments due this year is estimated at 16 billion dinars, up from 11 billion dinars in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IMF said the public sector wage bill is about 17.6% of Tunisia&#8217;s GDP &#8212; among the highest in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Downgrade<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few days ago, credit rating agency Moody&#8217;s announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/disappointing-results-for-tunisian-stock-exchange-by-the-end-of-2020\/\">downgrading <\/a>Tunisia&#8217;s long-term issuance of foreign and domestic currency from B2 to B3, and maintained its negative expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move came after Moody&#8217;s had confirmed Tunisia&#8217;s B2 rating with a negative outlook, in October 2020, after it placed Tunisia&#8217;s B2 rating \u201cunder review for downgrade\u201d in April 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moody&#8217;s stated that Tunisia&#8217;s new classification reflects weak governance in the face of mounting social restrictions that are increasingly preventing the government&#8217;s flexibility in implementing fiscal adjustment and public sector reforms that would achieve stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency said the new classification also reflects the remarkable increase in Tunisia&#8217;s debt burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moody&#8217;s warned that the negative outlook is the result of downside risks related to further delay in negotiating and implementing a program funded by IMF.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has forecasted Tunisia&#8217;s GDP growth to recover by 3.8% in 2021 as the pandemic begins to recede.
