{"id":186015,"date":"2021-01-29T19:55:42","date_gmt":"2021-01-29T19:55:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/?p=186015"},"modified":"2021-01-29T19:55:52","modified_gmt":"2021-01-29T19:55:52","slug":"more-loans-for-africa-to-emerge-from-covid-repercussions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/more-loans-for-africa-to-emerge-from-covid-repercussions\/","title":{"rendered":"More Loans For Africa To Emerge From COVID Repercussions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiy-v6i7cHuAhXUSxUIHSIvDr0QFjAAegQIBhAC&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.africafc.org%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw0WabkPja7yJc9XtyawH5-G\">The African Finance Corporation<\/a> will double its loans in the black continent to fight the COIVD and its effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AFC aims to reform the black continent\u2019s infrastructure and aid its economic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Helping with recovery<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AFC announced it first direct-borrowing arrangement with the OPEC Fund for International Development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The organization plans to lend more than $2 billion on a net basis in 2021, said Banji Fehintola, the AFC\u2019s senior director, head of treasury &amp; financial institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have always done at least $1 billion of net lending annually at a minimum,\u201d he said in an interview on Wednesday, adding that this year\u2019s amount would be a record. \u201cWe are trying to get the continent back from the Covid pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">African countries were severely affected last year as limiting the spread of COVID-19 attempts closed the economic activities and disrupted trade. Africa experienced its first recession in a quarter-century last year, according to the World Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a need to help Africa back as quickly as possible,\u201d Fehintola said. \u201cWe\u2019ve always tried to mobilize 10 times\u201d what the organization contributes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lending growth<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a separate statement, the two institutions said that OPEC Fund agreed to lend AFC $50 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fund alone plans to lend $450 million in Africa this year, up 9% from 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two institutions see investment opportunities in the countries of the continent after the free trade zone agreement for the African continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AFC was established in 2007, and includes 28 African countries. It has provided loans of $8.4 billion so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Trade agreement<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a separate context, Gemina Africa participated in the torch lighting ceremony in the African Continental Free Trade Area. The event announced the launch of the Free Trade Agreement between more than 50 African countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement marks a turning point for trade in Africa, as it aims to increase trade exchange between African countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It strengthens Africa&#8217;s trade position in the global marketplace by enhancing Africa&#8217;s common voice and policy space in global trade negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement is led by the pan-African private sector, under the umbrella of the African Business Council.
