{"id":183171,"date":"2021-01-02T17:31:02","date_gmt":"2021-01-02T17:31:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/?p=183171"},"modified":"2021-01-02T17:32:43","modified_gmt":"2021-01-02T17:32:43","slug":"tesla-short-sellers-lost-tens-of-billions-of-dollars-in-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/tesla-short-sellers-lost-tens-of-billions-of-dollars-in-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Tesla Short Sellers Lost Tens of Billions of Dollars in 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tesla Inc.&#8217;s short sellers lost tens of billions of dollars last year as the stock surged to new highs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tesla is the largest electric vehicle maker in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The largest in history<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With Tesla shares rising by more than 730%, the share&#8217;s short sellers incurred losses of more than $38 billion during 2020, according to data from S3 Partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the next-biggest loss for short sellers was on Apple at just less than $7 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This \u201cis not only the largest mark-to-market loss for any stock this year, it is the largest yearly mark-to-market loss I have ever seen,\u201d said Ihor Dusaniwsky, a managing director at S3 Partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EV maker and its investors have now the upper hand against a group of short-sellers who have come to be known as \u201cTSLAQ-Q\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Q is the character exchanges tack onto a stock ticker after a company files for bankruptcy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leading sellers<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These short-sellers include some notable names, such as Jim Chanos, president and founder of the hedge fund Kynikos Associates<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chanos recently reduced the size of his trade. He told Bloomberg TV early in December it\u2019s been \u201cpainful.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many short sellers of Tesla closed out their positions throughout 2020. The number of short-sold shares fell to less than 6% from 20% a year ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe short squeeze has been going on all year. It\u2019s been an angled straight line down,\u201d Dusaniwsky said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Winning streak<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tesla shares rose in 2020, making profits for five consecutive quarters amid growing sentiment on Wall Street that the shift to electric cars is accelerating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company&#8217;s share was added to the Standard &amp; Poor&#8217;s 500 index on Dec. 21, and many small electric car companies rose along with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next potential catalyst might be in early January when Tesla reports fourth-quarter vehicle production and delivery figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tesla is expected to deliver half a million cars in 2020, a huge achievement for a company that initially struggled to produce large quantities of its Model 3.
