{"id":152075,"date":"2020-12-13T17:00:50","date_gmt":"2020-12-13T17:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/?p=152075"},"modified":"2020-12-13T17:00:50","modified_gmt":"2020-12-13T17:00:50","slug":"supermarkets-told-to-stockpile-food-as-fears-grow-of-no-deal-brexit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/supermarkets-told-to-stockpile-food-as-fears-grow-of-no-deal-brexit\/","title":{"rendered":"Supermarkets &#8216;told to stockpile food&#8217; as fears grow of no-deal Brexit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-38z03z\">The UK government is reported to have warned supermarkets to stockpile food and other essential supplies amid increasing fears of a no-deal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/eu-referendum\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Brexit<\/a>\u00a0in less than three weeks\u2019 time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">Boris Johnson and the president of EU commission, Ursula von der Leyen,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2020\/dec\/13\/hopes-for-avoiding-no-deal-brexit-hang-on-boris-johnson-call-to-von-der-leyen\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">agreed on Sunday to continue<\/a>\u00a0with the fraught trade negotiations, but ministers have played down the chances of a deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">And in anticipation of shortages prompted by a no-deal, ministers have told supermarkets to start stockpiling goods,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/ministers-warn-supermarkets-to-stockpile-food-amid-no-deal-brexit-fears-zc36tsf6z\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">according to the Sunday Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">\u201cThere was a conversation a week ago when ministers said prepare for no-deal. This weekend the message is that it\u2019s no-deal,\u201d a senior consultant to one of the big supermarkets told the paper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">The consultant added: \u201cSupermarkets and ministers are hugely worried about panic-buying. They saw what happened over Covid when people started hoarding toilet rolls and now how quickly it can go wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">Food producers have warned supplies of fresh vegetables will be worst hit if tariffs were imposed on goods in the event of a no-deal. They say shortages could last for at least three months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">Andrew Opie, the director of food and sustainability at the British Retail Consortium, said: \u201cRetailers and suppliers are doing everything they can to reduce disruption for consumers, including increasing the stock of non-perishable items and looking at alternative supply routes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">\u201cThe main impact [of] Brexit will be on imported fresh produce, such as much fresh fruit and vegetables, which cannot be stored for long periods by either retailers or consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">The government has also told suppliers of medicines, medical devices and vaccines to stockpile six weeks\u2019 worth at secure locations in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">The foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, insisted the UK has \u201cenough diversity of supply\u201d of medicines in the case of a no-deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">Asked if he could guarantee the flow of medical supplies to the UK, Raab told the BBC\u2019s Andrew Marr Show: \u201cWell of course, with things like vaccines and more generally medical supplies the NHS and DHSC (Department of Health and Social Care) already have a widespread programme of stockpiling and security of supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">\u201cSo I actually think \u2013 you know, there may be shifts \u2013 but we\u2019ve got enough diversity of supply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">He also appeared to confirm a separate report in the Sunday Telegraph that the government has drawn up plans for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2020\/12\/12\/billions-no-deal-brexit-help-farmers-factories\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">bailout worth billions for farmers and food producers<\/a>\u00a0in the event of a no-deal<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">Asked if the government planned to spend \u00a38bn bailing out farmers, Raab said: \u201cWe\u2019ll always look, as we\u2019ve shown through coronavirus, that we want to support those vulnerable communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">Meanwhile, there continued to be reports of long delays and tailbacks on motorways at the port of Dover as hauliers blamed the queues on stockpiling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\">The shadow justice secretary, David Lammy, accused the prime minister of gambling with public supplies.
