Tory<\/a>\u00a0voters now want higher taxes to improve public services and a more equal society, says a report warning\u00a0Boris Johnson<\/a>\u00a0not to neglect his \u201cRed Wall<\/a>\u2019 gains.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

They \u201clean to the left on the economy\u201d, but to the right on socio-cultural issues, the study argues \u2013 also demanding a government that is tough on crime and\u00a0immigration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Written by the Conservative think-tank Onward<\/i>, it found that 1 in 5 people \u2013 around 3.2 million \u2013 only \u201clent their votes\u201d to the party to deliver last year\u2019s election triumph and could quickly desert it.<\/div>\n

Most of those live in the so-called \u201cRed Wall\u201d seats of the North, dramatically snatched from\u00a0Labour<\/a>, but \u2013 happily for Mr Johnson \u2013 their priorities are shared by his \u201ctraditional voters\u201d.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cA year on from the election, it is fashionable to say Boris Johnson must choose between loyal voters in the South and new voters in the Red Wall. This is a false choice,\u201d said Will Tanner,\u00a0Onward<\/i>\u2019s director.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThey both want a government that is tough on crime and immigration, that delivers Brexit and which is willing for the state to intervene to fix problems in the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The findings go to the heart of the dispute, bubbling under the surface, between the prime minister and his chancellor, over how to restore the public finances wrecked by\u00a0Covid-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n

Rishi Sunak<\/a>, a traditional small-state Tory, is likely to favour spending cuts over tax hikes \u2013 while Mr Johnson has renounced the years of austerity and will be keener to open the purse strings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The\u00a0Onward<\/i>\u00a0research, based on interviews with 12,000 people before and after last December\u2019s poll, showed there was \u201cno turning back\u201d, Mr Tanner argued.<\/p>\n

\n

The Conservatives could only be certain of victory at the next election, in 2024, if they delivered on their pledge to \u201clevel up\u201d the country \u2013 rather than try to appeal to \u201cthe Notting Hill set\u201d.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe party\u2019s new coalition is not only more working class and provincial than before, it is more culturally coherent as a result,\u201d Mr Tanner argued.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThere is no clear distinction between the values of more traditional Tory voters in the South and first-time voters in the North and Midlands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThis agenda may not win back metropolitan areas like Battersea or Brighton \u2013 but those are yesterday\u2019s battlegrounds not tomorrow\u2019s. There can be no turning back.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The think-tank said only a 4.3 per cent swing to Labour would be needed to generate a hung parliament in 2024.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

However,\u00a0Keir Starmer<\/a>\u2019s party faced greater challenges with its coalition of voters, which is \u201cheavily split\u201d between moderates and those \u201cradically left-wing on the economy and liberal on social issues\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The study argued Sir Keir most adopt more right-wing economic and cultural policies \u2013 or be stuck on no higher than 37 per cent of voters, winning no more than 260 seats.<\/p>\n
