The\u00a04,500-year-old monument<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0believed to have been constructed\u00a0for the Pharaoh Khufu over two decades and\u00a0remains as the oldest and largest\u00a0of the three ancient pyramids on the Giza Plateau. Estimated to weigh approximately six million tonnes, the structure is said to have been\u00a0made using 2.3 million blocks of limestone<\/a>, some weighing as much as 80 tonnes. There have been numerous theories about\u00a0how the Great Pyramid was built<\/a>, but most experts agree it was by moving huge stones from a nearby quarry and dragging and lifting them into place.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But structural engineer Peter James believes those long-held theories are incorrect.<\/p>\n

Mr James, who has spent the last 14 years working on preserving the historic buildings and temples of Egypt \u2013 most recently the Step and Bent pyramids \u2013 says ancient Egyptian construction techniques were \u201cso simple that it\u2019s laughable”.<\/p>\n

He told\u00a0Express.co.uk: \u201cThe Great Pyramid is 230 metres long and approximately 150 metres high.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs long as a block goes in and is the same height up, you can start on all four corners and go all the way up at the same 45 degrees.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s exactly what masons do today, they make sure it’s square. As the pyramid went up the top got smaller.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut no builder would ever put squared blocks inside. If you just build the outside foundation you can fill it with much smaller blocks quicker.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2015, the ScanPyramids project was launched to provide several non-invasive and non-destructive techniques which may help to provide a better understanding of the Great Pyramid\u2019s structure.<\/p>\n

After two years of work, French experts\u00a0announced the discovery of the \u201cBig Void,\u201d\u00a0a 30-metre previously unknown cavity located above the Grand Gallery, but there has been no development since.<\/p>\n

And Mr James, who is also the author of \u2018Saving the Pyramids: Twenty First Century Engineering and Egypt’s Ancient Monuments<\/a>,\u2019 says he is not surprised, tipping there to be many more of these gaps.<\/p>\n

He told\u00a0Express.co.uk: \u201cI\u2019m sure there are more voids there. If you use smaller stones you will get many of these.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs massive as the Great Pyramid is, it is structurally very sound and I\u2019m sure there are holes and voids in there which are part of that.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs they went up, they would have got to a point where they put support beams in, which would have created gaps.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey would have left these empty or filled them with a material that is a different density to the outside.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure there will be more similar discoveries in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even more incredibly, the Newport-based Egyptologist\u00a0says he has a solution to exploring these voids without creating damage to the pyramid.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cOne of the things I did when I went to the Bent Pyramid was say \u2018we drill holes up to 34 metres-long and 100mm in diameter \u2013\u00a0you can\u2019t see where we\u2019ve been\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018Why don\u2019t you let me drill from the outside and tell you exactly what\u2019s in there?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThey wouldn\u2019t allow me to, you have to remember the amount of money that comes from these ancient monuments, so they really don\u2019t want all the secrets revealed at once.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey still want the mystery so people can come in and spend their money on visiting.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe amount of stuff that has not been unearthed is astounding.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr James has spent his career strengthening and restoring historically significant structures all around the world, from Windsor Castle to the White House.<\/p>\n

In \u2018Saving the Pyramids,\u2019 he puts forward a unique perspective to the structural engineering of ancient Egypt, giving his opinion on common theories surrounding the pyramids \u2013 along with new and innovative projections on their construction.<\/p>\n
