{"id":151818,"date":"2020-11-12T11:07:20","date_gmt":"2020-11-12T11:07:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/?p=151818"},"modified":"2020-11-12T11:07:20","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T11:07:20","slug":"lockdown-sales-boost-at-bm-prompts-250m-special-dividend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/lockdown-sales-boost-at-bm-prompts-250m-special-dividend\/","title":{"rendered":"Lockdown sales boost at B&#038;M prompts \u00a3250m special dividend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Discount retailer\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2020\/sep\/29\/bm-steps-up-expansion-after-lockdown-sales-boom\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">B&amp;M<\/a>\u00a0is paying its shareholders a \u00a3250m special dividend, after a boost in sales during lockdown almost doubled profits in the first half of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The group, which sells everything from homeware and toys to electrical items and pet supplies, was among the essential retailers allowed to remain open during the UK-wide lockdown in the spring, when it proved popular with shoppers.<\/p>\n<p>Its UK revenues rose by almost 30% in the six months to 26 September and pre-tax profits soared by 95%, to \u00a3296m,\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2020\/sep\/29\/bm-steps-up-expansion-after-lockdown-sales-boom\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">higher than it had forecast in September<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Simon Arora, B&amp;M chief executive, said the firm\u2019s business model proved \u201cwell-attuned to the evolving needs of customers\u201d, even though it does not sell any products through its website.<\/p>\n<p>B&amp;M, which\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2020\/aug\/28\/itv-to-drop-out-of-ftse-100-after-collapse-in-advertising-market-value-slump-lockdown-coronavirus\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">was elevated to the FTSE 100 index<\/a>\u00a0in September, benefitted from the location of its stores in\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2020\/jul\/13\/shoppers-avoiding-high-streets-england-northern-ireland-data-shows\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">out-of-town retail parks<\/a>, which have attracted more shoppers than high streets or shopping centres during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur combination of everyday value across a broad range of product categories and convenient out-of-town locations has proved popular with shoppers,\u201d Arora said.<\/p>\n<p>The group\u2019s decision to pay a special dividend of 25p per share on top of its ordinary dividend is likely to\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2020\/oct\/07\/tesco-hit-by-533m-covid-costs-but-sales-jump-during-pandemic\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">reignite criticism of shareholder payouts by retailers<\/a>, who have received taxpayer support including a business rates holiday during Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>B&amp;M said it had saved \u00a335m through business rates relief, but that this was offset by increased costs of implementing social distancing in stores during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The group has repaid the \u00a33.7m in support it had received from the UK government\u2019s furlough scheme in the spring, and said it did not intend to access the scheme again. During the first half it created more than 1,800 jobs<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company has clearly benefited from essential retailer status and has had a tailwind during lockdown,\u201d said Greg Lawless, an equity analyst at stockbroker Shore Capital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cB&amp;M has, arguably, had the perfect calm compared to the storm faced by much of UK retail in 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The discount retailer, which has more than 600 stores in the UK, said it expects sales to slow as fresh lockdown restrictions ease, although they currently remain at a similar level to the spring.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2020\/nov\/12\/lockdown-sales-boost-at-bm-prompts-250m-special-dividend\">SOURCE<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Discount retailer\u00a0B&amp;M\u00a0is paying its shareholders a \u00a3250m special dividend, after a boost in sales during lockdown almost doubled profits in the first half of the year.
