For the four years she has owned it, she says, it has \u201cabsolutely 100%\u201d made her happier.<\/p>\n<p>Her experience tallies with\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/insight\/content\/doi\/10.1108\/BFJ-07-2020-0593\/full\/html?skipTracking=true\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a study<\/a>\u00a0by academics at the University of Sheffield, published last week, which outlines the wellbeing benefits of allotment gardening. The 163 volunteers recorded \u201chigh levels of social and community activities, including the sharing of surplus food produce, knowledge exchange, awareness and interaction with wildlife, emotional connection to their allotment, appreciation of time spent outside and aesthetic delight in the natural world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to Miriam Dobson, a post-doctoral research associate and one of the report\u2019s authors, there was \u201cquite a wide spectrum of mental health benefits\u201d. People \u201cwere talking about community events, the nice feeling of sharing food, knowledge and skills\u201d, as well as a \u201cconnection to seasons and a joy in weather\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson, a 35-year-old lecturer, attests to benefiting from watching her plants grow \u2013 carrots, parsnips and cabbage; \u201cwe tend to stick to what\u2019s used in Scottish cooking\u201d. But also in sharing the fruits of her labour, either literally or via Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2020\/nov\/01\/loneliness-business-booming-pandemic\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">loneliness a growing issue in the UK<\/a>, allotments can provide a valuable community. For Anderson, coming together with fellow allotmenteers isn\u2019t \u201cnecessarily about connecting with people who are similar to me \u2013 it\u2019s about connecting with people you have nothing in common with apart from growing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Another allotmenteer, Steve Lewis, says there are always people passing through his green spot in Sheffield. \u201cIt\u2019s nice to have a chat; see how the asparagus is or isn\u2019t doing,\u201d says the 61-year-old retired maths teacher on his hillside plot.<\/p>\n<p>The proven mental health benefits of spending time outdoors are increasingly being heeded. As Dobson\u2019s report notes, in Scotland doctors have piloted\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2018\/oct\/05\/scottish-gps-nhs-begin-prescribing-rambling-birdwatching\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201cprescribing\u201d outdoor activities<\/a>. Lewis, speaking against a backdrop of artichokes, says: \u201cIt\u2019s relaxing, a nice way to get away from Covid, Brexit and Trump.\u201d It is Thursday afternoon and he is weeding with his son, James, who has learning difficulties and likes to chop down the nettles. \u201cHe really benefits from it,\u201d says Lewis.<\/p>\n<p>Dobson\u2019s study found many people talked \u201cabout feeling connected to nature \u2026 [and] having repeated encounters with the same wildlife, which, especially for people in urban areas, is really important\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This is something many allotment holders can corroborate. The Hodgsons, who grow rainbow chard, purple-sprouting broccoli and lots of garlic on their Sheffield plot, see plenty of bird life: \u201cThere are long-tailed tits nesting in the hollybush, you get blackcaps singing in that tree, jays on the acorns, the odd great-spotted woodpecker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anderson hopes she is instilling this connection with nature in her toddlers. \u201cIt\u2019s great being able to get them to help sow stuff,\u201d she says, conceding that sometimes she puts them in front of Netflix so she can garden.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of physical health, Dobson notes that on top of the exercise involved in growing, people who have allotments are also \u201cmore likely to get their five-a-day fruit and vegetables than people who don\u2019t grow their own food\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Dobson believes the findings have been reinforced since the pandemic \u2013 a lot of contributors have emailed, saying \u201ctheir allotments have been a haven during lockdown, giving some semblance of normality\u201d. For Anderson, who lives in a flat, having an allotment, parts of which she has made into a sandpit and swing, was a godsend.<\/p>\n<p>Poet and allotmenteer Sally Goldsmith thinks these \u201clittle bits of country in the town\u201d are important for people, particularly in such uncertain times because they \u201cgive you a bit of control\u201d. She researched the relationships of Sheffield allotmenteers to their patches, turning her findings into songs \u2013 in one, called Allotment Anarchists, she notes how people stage mini-rebellions via their plots.<\/p>\n<p>Demand for allotments has boomed this year, and many people must join waiting lists. Phil Gomersall, president of the\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nsalg.org.uk\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">National Allotment Society<\/a>, says his site in Leeds has seen a 700% increase in demand. \u201cThe true benefits of allotments have been realised in these difficult times,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The waiting lists \u201cdemonstrate that we haven\u2019t provided enough space nationally,\u201d says Dobson. There has been a loss of allotment space in recent decades,\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffield.ac.uk\/sustainable-food\/news\/allotment-land-cut-65-cent-mid-1900s\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">with cuts of 65% since the 1950s<\/a>. The losses, she says, have not been equally borne, with eight times more allotment land closure in the most deprived communities compared to the least.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to provide enough land so that everybody who wants to participate in allotment gardening can,\u201d she says. \u201cThen you can look into the best ways it can be used to facilitate growing for people that maybe don\u2019t have the resources, time or skills to take on an entire plot but might be interested in being part of a community gardening scheme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The benefits of allotments also extends to food supply. Academics at Sheffield\u2019s Institute for Sustainable Food this summer posited the restoration of allotment space as part of the\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffield.ac.uk\/sustainable-food\/news\/coronavirus-pandemic-symptom-broken-food-system\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">solution to the fragility<\/a>\u00a0of our global food system, which has been laid bare by the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The restoration of recently lost allotments could,\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-53097572\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">according to one study<\/a>\u00a0co-authored by Dobson, provide 6% of the population with their \u201cfive-a-day\u201d.
