{"id":151728,"date":"2020-10-21T07:13:09","date_gmt":"2020-10-21T07:13:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/peter-mandelson-calls-on-brussels-to-block-nvidia-arm-chip-merger\/"},"modified":"2020-10-21T07:13:09","modified_gmt":"2020-10-21T07:13:09","slug":"peter-mandelson-calls-on-brussels-to-block-nvidia-arm-chip-merger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/peter-mandelson-calls-on-brussels-to-block-nvidia-arm-chip-merger\/","title":{"rendered":"Peter Mandelson calls on Brussels to block Nvidia-ARM chip merger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels should intervene and block the acquisition of Britain\u2019s tech jewel ARM by U.S. chip giant Nvidia, according to Peter Mandelson, a former EU trade commissioner and former U.K. business minister.<strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mandelson argued that Brexit should play no role in the EU\u2019s calculus and sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in which he mapped out what he saw as the broader strategic importance of keeping ARM within a European commercial eco-system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cARM is a major European asset, the question of its future ownership is of utmost importance to \u2026 Europe\u2019s industrial policy,\u201d Mandelson told POLITICO in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only people who have the ability and the political will to stand up against this acquisition on competition grounds are in Europe,\u201d he said. \u201cBrexit is completely irrelevant, it transcends Brexit. It\u2019s a question of Europe\u2019s technological sovereignty, not just Britain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mandelson, who was one of the big hitters in the British Labour Party, is now chairman of a consulting company, but insisted he wrote to von der Leyen in a personal capacity and that he had no stakes in the deal.<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia last month said it is <a href=\"https:\/\/nvidianews.nvidia.com\/news\/nvidia-to-acquire-arm-for-40-billion-creating-worlds-premier-computing-company-for-the-age-of-ai\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">offering $40 billion<\/a> to acquire ARM, a U.K.-based chip designer that licenses more than 500 companies with the designs of chips embedded in billions of processors. These companies include U.S. tech giants like Intel, Qualcomm, Apple and Nvidia, but also European chip-makers such as STMicroelectronics and NXP Semiconductors.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear whether competition authorities will investigate the deal, but Europe\u2019s probe would be of particular importance, according to Mandelson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not sure Britain has the strength to act alone \u2026 It doesn\u2019t suit the tactic of the British government\u201d to oppose such a deal while seeking a free-trade agreement with the United States, he said.<\/p>\n<h3>A crucial deal<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cMicrochips [are] a major strategic asset \u2026 as important in this era as steel in the previous era,\u201d Mandelson continued. ARM-designed chips have become key technologies for artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing and high-performance computing.<\/p>\n<p>ARM\u2019s business model \u201cis based on neutrality and independence; it\u2019s an open licensing model,\u201d Mandelson explained.
