{"id":151497,"date":"2020-09-21T22:25:13","date_gmt":"2020-09-21T22:25:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/theresa-may-cannot-support-governments-brexit-bill\/"},"modified":"2020-09-21T22:25:13","modified_gmt":"2020-09-21T22:25:13","slug":"theresa-may-cannot-support-governments-brexit-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/theresa-may-cannot-support-governments-brexit-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Theresa May \u2018cannot support\u2019 government\u2019s Brexit bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Prime Minister Theresa May has said she \u201ccannot support\u201d the government\u2019s plan to override parts of its Brexit agreement with the EU.<\/p>\n<p>She told MPs the move, which breaks international law, would damage \u201ctrust in the United Kingdom\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Internal Market Bill will be voted on in the Commons on Tuesday, having passed its first hurdle last week.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers say it contains vital safeguards to protect Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The bill is designed to enable goods and services to flow freely across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland when the UK leaves the EU\u2019s single market and customs union on 1 January.<\/p>\n<p>But it gives the government the power to change aspects of the EU withdrawal agreement, a legally binding deal governing the terms of the UK\u2019s exit from the EU earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers say this is a failsafe mechanism in case the EU interprets the agreement, in particular the section on Northern Ireland, in an \u201cextreme and unreasonable\u201d way.
