{"id":151122,"date":"2020-08-28T22:20:43","date_gmt":"2020-08-28T22:20:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/eu-mulls-sanctions-on-turkey-over-eastern-mediterranean-tensions\/"},"modified":"2020-08-28T22:20:43","modified_gmt":"2020-08-28T22:20:43","slug":"eu-mulls-sanctions-on-turkey-over-eastern-mediterranean-tensions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/eu-mulls-sanctions-on-turkey-over-eastern-mediterranean-tensions\/","title":{"rendered":"EU mulls sanctions on Turkey over Eastern Mediterranean tensions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BERLIN \u2014 The EU is considering imposing economic sanctions against Turkey over its gas drilling activities in the Eastern Mediterranean while urging Ankara to engage in a dialogue, the blocs foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must walk a fine line between preserving a true space for dialogue and at the same time showing collective strength in the defense of our common interests,\u201d Borrell told reporters following an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in the German capital.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey is pushing to explore for gas in the Eastern Mediterranean in waters that are also claimed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/greece-plans-nautical-boundary-shift-as-turkey-tensions-increase\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Greece and Cyprus<\/a>. Tensions between the two EU countries and Ankara have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/turkey-issues-new-drilling-authorization-in-waters-claimed-by-greece\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sharply increased in past weeks<\/a>, raising concerns of a military escalation.<\/p>\n<p>Borrell said that the EU wanted \u201cto give a serious chance to dialogue \u2026 [and] I will try to create a space for negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stressed, however, that \u201cthere is a growing frustration in the face of Turkish behavior,\u201d and added that EU foreign ministers had \u201casked the relevant Council working groups to speed up their work in order to add individuals suggested by Cyprus to the list of the existing [sanctions].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to targeting individual persons, ministers also discussed hitting Ankara with more far-reaching economic and financial sanctions, Borrell said. \u201cWe also agreed that in the absence of progress in engaging with Turkey, we could develop a list of further restrictive measures that could be discussed [by EU leaders] at the European Council on the 24th of September.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The EU could hit Turkeys economy in fields where it \u201cis more related to the European economy,\u201d Borrell said of the potential extended sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow we are listing personalities, we can pass to list assets, ships \u2026 prohibiting the use of European ports, of European capacities, technologies, supplies.
