Facebook banning pictures of people in blackface has unleashed accusations of censure from the Belgian far right.<\/p>\n

The Vlaams Belang party said Wednesday<\/a> that Facebooks decision<\/a> was an \u201cattack on our traditions.\u201d The party said it will prepare a resolution with other lawmakers in the European Parliament to condemn \u201carbitrary censure on social media\u201d and demand that the European Commission step in.<\/p>\n

The social media giants decision to ban racist depictions of Black people and Jews put it in the middle of a cultural rift over the Dutch and Belgian winter tradition of Sinterklaas, dragging Facebook into a debate that traditionally resurfaces every holiday season.<\/p>\n

The festival features a character called \u201cBlack Pete,\u201d a blacked up helper of the elderly Saint Nicholas. Activist groups say the custom is racist.<\/p>\n

Recent attempts to modify the character to be streaked with soot instead have faced pushback and Facebooks move was met with calls to flood social media with Black Pete images.<\/p>\n

Philippe De Backer, Belgiums caretaker minister of digital affairs, warned<\/a> in the aftermath of the 2018 Cambridge Analytica data breach scandal<\/a> that Big Tech shouldnt become \u201carbiters of what were thinking.\u201d Vlaams Belang said the same principle now applies to Black Pete.<\/p>\n

Some rights groups welcomed the move. \u201cIts never censure to address injustice,\u201d said Jerry Afriyie of the Dutch anti-racism collective Nederland Wordt Beter. \u201cRacism isnt an opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Afriyie said Facebook did what politicians have not. \u201cIf society cant solve racism, then you get commercial companies that have to step in.\u201d<\/p>\n
