{"id":150851,"date":"2020-08-10T22:21:08","date_gmt":"2020-08-10T22:21:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/germany-suspends-extradition-agreement-with-hong-kong\/"},"modified":"2020-08-10T22:21:08","modified_gmt":"2020-08-10T22:21:08","slug":"germany-suspends-extradition-agreement-with-hong-kong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/germany-suspends-extradition-agreement-with-hong-kong\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany suspends extradition agreement with Hong Kong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Germany has suspended its extradition agreement with Hong Kong, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The decision came after Hong Kongs leader Carrie Lam postponed legislative elections planned for September by a year because of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision by the Hong Kong government to disqualify 12 opposition candidates and to postpone elections to the Legislative Council represents a further infringement of the rights of Hong Kongs citizens,\u201d Maas <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GermanyDiplo\/status\/1289241831809548289\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cIn view of these latest developments, we have decided to suspend our extradition agreement with Hong Kong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Germanys move comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/uk-china-extradition-deal-hong-kong\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the U.K.<\/a>, Canada and Australia all suspended their agreements with the Chinese-ruled city.
