{"id":150781,"date":"2020-08-08T09:37:10","date_gmt":"2020-08-08T09:37:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/us-sanctions-hong-kong-leader-carrie-lam\/"},"modified":"2020-08-08T09:37:10","modified_gmt":"2020-08-08T09:37:10","slug":"us-sanctions-hong-kong-leader-carrie-lam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/us-sanctions-hong-kong-leader-carrie-lam\/","title":{"rendered":"US sanctions Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Treasury Department has imposed sanctions against Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam, the latest Trump administration action aimed at curbing Beijings influence over the semi-autonomous Chinese city.<\/p>\n<p>Lam, Hong Kongs chief executive, was added Friday to the list of \u201cSpecially Designated Nationals\u201d managed by the Office of Foreign Assets Control \u2014 the Treasury Department agency tasked with enforcing economic and trade sanctions<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of its enforcement efforts, OFAC publishes a list of individuals and companies owned or controlled by, or acting for or on behalf of, targeted countries,\u201d according to the department. The assets of those SDNs are blocked and Americans \u201care generally prohibited from dealing with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lams addition to the list comes a week after she announced Hong Kong would delay by a year its Legislative Council elections, previously scheduled to take place in September, due to coronavirus concerns.<\/p>\n<p>White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany denounced Lams decision last Friday, saying it \u201cundermines the democratic processes and freedoms that have underpinned Hong Kongs prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McEnany also said Lams invocation of her emergency powers to force the postponement represented \u201conly the most recent in a growing list of broken promises by Beijing, which promised autonomy and freedoms to the Hong Kong people until 2047 in the Sino-British Joint Declaration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump in recent months has stepped up efforts to punish Chinas government for behavior including its initial handling of the coronavirus pandemic, exertion of greater authority in Hong Kong amid a pro-democracy movement there, and internment of Muslim Uighurs and other ethnic minorities.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/us-sanctions-hong-kong-leader-carrie-lam\/?utm_source=RSS_Feed&amp;utm_medium=RSS&amp;utm_campaign=RSS_Syndication\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More \u2013 Source<\/a><br \/>\n[contf]<br \/>\n[contfnew]<br \/>\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/snap.md\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/politico-logo.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">politico<\/a><\/h5>\n<p>[contfnewc]<br \/>\n[contfnewc]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Treasury Department has imposed sanctions against Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam, the latest Trump ..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":150782,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[202],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-150781","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.8 -
