{"id":150699,"date":"2020-07-18T22:23:32","date_gmt":"2020-07-18T22:23:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/trump-says-biden-wants-to-defund-the-police\/"},"modified":"2020-07-18T22:23:32","modified_gmt":"2020-07-18T22:23:32","slug":"trump-says-biden-wants-to-defund-the-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/trump-says-biden-wants-to-defund-the-police\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump Says Biden Wants to Defund the Police"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Donald Trump accused former Vice President Joe Biden of wanting to defund the police, a charge Bidens campaign challenged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBiden wants to defund the police,\u201d Trump, a Republican, said in an interview with Fox Newss Chris Wallace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe signed a charter with Bernie Sanders,\u201d Trump added before being interrupted by Wallace.<\/p>\n<p>Bidens campaign said in June the presumptive Democratic nominee \u201cdoes not believe that police should be defunded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBiden supports the urgent need for reform\u2014including funding for public schools, summer programs, and mental health and substance abuse treatment separate from funding for policing\u2014so that officers can focus on the job of policing,\u201d Andrew Bates, a campaign spokesman, said in a statement sent to news outlets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis also means funding community policing programs that improve relationships between officers and residents, and provides the training that is needed to avert tragic, unjustifiable deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden was asked during an interview with CBS whether he supports defunding the police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I dont support defunding the police. Santiago\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Charter<\/h2>\n<p>Trump was referring to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/biden-sanders-task-forces-unveil-policy-recommendations-for-party-unity_3417857.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a set<\/a> of policy recommendations from task forces that include Biden supporters along with people who support Sanders, a senator who was running for the Democratic presidential nomination before quitting the race earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>A task force on policing recommended dispersing federal funding to create \u201cto create a civilian corps of unarmed first responders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The corps would include social workers, mental health professionals, and others \u201cwho can handle nonviolent emergencies including order maintenance violations, mental health emergencies, and low-level conflicts outside the criminal justice system, freeing police officers to concentrate on the most serious crimes,\u201d according to the recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>The document doesnt explicitly say the formation of the corps would lead to the defunding of police.
