The decision \u201crightly stresses that, where modern technology is involved, economic and security issues cannot be treated separately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Metin Hakverdi, a Social-Democrat member of the German Bundestag, echoed the same point: \u201cWe need a geo-strategic positioning in Germany and the European Union with regard to 5G and our digital sovereignty,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MetinHakverdi\/status\/1283074232361136128\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Merkels move<\/h3>\n<p>In Germany, members of parliament have lamented a lack of progress on a draft law that would beef up security requirements for telecom companies procuring 5G equipment.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The delay is largely due to the fact that ministers in Chancellor Angela Merkels government are split on how strict rules concerning Huawei should be. Industry is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/?p=1401885\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">applying significant pressure<\/a> to maintain the Chinese firms broad market access.<\/p>\n<p>Reinhard B\u00fctikofer, a German Greens member of the European Parliament and head of its China delegation, used the U.K. decision to press the government: \u201cIts Berlins turn to move!\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bueti\/status\/1283009825895522308\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a>, adding that Merkel was at risk of being the \u201cstumbling block\u201d preventing a joint approach on Huawei between EU countries, the U.S. and countries in the Five Eyes intelligence partnership.<\/p>\n<h3>Follow London?<\/h3>\n<p>Other EU countries are also evaluating their approach to 5G security \u2014 in many cases looking at the U.K. as a model.<\/p>\n<p>London restricted Huawei from \u201ccore\u201d networks and set a cap of 35 percent in \u201cradio access\u201d parts in an earlier decision on Huawei in January.<\/p>\n<p>Belgium took <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/belgium-huawei-restrictions\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a similar line<\/a> in June. The Netherlands announced a ban from \u201ccore\u201d parts of the network last year.
