{"id":150510,"date":"2020-07-08T22:20:43","date_gmt":"2020-07-08T22:20:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/liam-fox-wins-uk-nomination-for-wto-top-job\/"},"modified":"2020-07-08T22:20:43","modified_gmt":"2020-07-08T22:20:43","slug":"liam-fox-wins-uk-nomination-for-wto-top-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/liam-fox-wins-uk-nomination-for-wto-top-job\/","title":{"rendered":"Liam Fox wins UK nomination for WTO top job"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON \u2014 The U.K. will nominate former International Trade Secretary Liam Fox to be the next World Trade Organization director general.<\/p>\n<p>The pro-Brexit Conservative MP has promised to \u201crecapture that spirit\u201d of using trade to promote peace and human progress in his bid to replace outgoing Director General Roberto Azev\u00eado.<\/p>\n<p>A number of senior officials involved in the process confirmed to POLITICO that Fox had clinched the nomination, with Downing Street set to confirm the news later on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>In an opinion piece <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2020\/07\/04\/wto-needs-shake-late\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">for the Sunday Telegraph<\/a> at the weekend, Fox complained that trade disputes at the WTO take too long to settle, while there is \u201ctoo little transparency and oversight, so it is difficult to know who is following the rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cWe need to bring new energy to the global trade debate before it is too late. The challenges we were already facing will only be made more difficult by the COVID-19 crisis.
