DAVID CAMERON failed to answer questions on the Magna Carta and the British patriotic song \u2018Rule Britannia\u2019 when he appeared on David Letterman\u2019s Late Show in 2012, unearthed reports reveal.<\/p>\n

May 7 should have been general election day. Under the Fixed Term Parliament Act, Britons would have cast their votes five years after David Cameron secured his majority in May 2015. However, the former Prime Minister<\/a> failed his first big challenge in the new Parliament: to win the referendum on British membership of the European Union. He announced his resignation the day after the Brexit<\/a> vote on June 24, 2016.
\n[contfnewc]<\/p>\n

He claimed in an interview back in October that \u201dnot a day goes by\u201d when he does not think about his failed strategy to keep Britain in the EU<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Tory grandee told ITV News: \u201dI regret that we lost the campaign. I regret I let expectations about the negotiation run far too high.<\/p>\n

\u201cI regret some of the individual decisions we made in the campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think perhaps theres a case to say the timing could have been different.\u201d<\/p>\n

While losing the referendum might have been the biggest failure of his career, unearthed reports reveal Mr Cameron<\/a> was no stranger to gaffes.<\/p>\n

In 2012, the former Prime Minister<\/a> embarrassed himself live on the world\u2019s most famous late night TV show, giving a number of incorrect answers as David Letterman quizzed his knowledge of core aspects of Britain\u2019s history on the Late Show.<\/p>\n

Asked for the literal translation of \u201cMagna Carta\u201d, Mr Cameron was stumped, failing even to take a guess.<\/p>\n

Mr Letterman said: \u201cOh it would be good if you knew this.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt literally means \u2018Great Charter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Quizzed about its whereabouts now, Mr Cameron<\/a> could only manage to say: \u201cIt does exist.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also incorrectly guessed who composed Rule Britannia, taking a stab at Edward Elgar.<\/p>\n

Mr Letterman told viewers that it was in fact Thomas Arne.<\/p>\n

Admitting his failure at the end of the questioning, Mr Cameron joked: \u201cYou have found me out.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is bad, I have ended my career on your show tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now Prime Minister Boris Johnson jumped to his defence at the time, claiming Mr Cameron had deliberately fluffed his lines so he didn\u2019t appear too clever.<\/p>\n

Mr Johnson said: \u201cI think he was only pretending.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he knew full well what Magna Carta means.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a brilliant move in order to show his demotic credentials and that he didn\u2019t have Latin bursting out of every orifice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Cameron<\/a>, who became the first sitting British Prime Minister to appear on the Late Show, was welcomed onto the stage to the tune of Rule Britannia and dry ice pumping into the studio to replicate a London fog.<\/p>\n

The Magna Carta was signed by King John in 1215, giving his subjects rights, protections and security for the first time.
