{"id":150079,"date":"2020-05-30T01:00:14","date_gmt":"2020-05-30T01:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/uk-sets-out-hong-kong-path-to-citizenship-plan\/"},"modified":"2020-05-30T01:00:14","modified_gmt":"2020-05-30T01:00:14","slug":"uk-sets-out-hong-kong-path-to-citizenship-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/uk-sets-out-hong-kong-path-to-citizenship-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"UK sets out Hong Kong path to citizenship plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON \u2014 The U.K.s plan to offer a \u201cpath to citizenship\u201d for British Nationals Overseas in Hong Kong \u2014 should China persist with plans to impose a new security law on the territory \u2014 could extend to nearly three million people, the Home Office indicated.<\/p>\n<p>Home Secretary Priti Patel reiterated on Friday that if China imposed the national security law, the U.K. would \u201cexplore options to allow British Nationals Overseas to apply for leave to stay in the U.K., including a path to citizenship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab on Thursday said the U.K. would allow British Nationals Overseas (BNO) passport holders to come to the country for an extendable period of 12 months, lifting the current six month cap.<\/p>\n<p>Passport holders would be able to  \u201capply to work and study for extendable periods of 12 months,\u201d Raab said.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. Home Office estimates there are 349,881 holders of BNO passports, but clarified in a <a href=\"https:\/\/homeofficemedia.blog.gov.uk\/2020\/05\/29\/media-factsheet-hong-kong-bnos\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">factsheet published Friday<\/a> that in total there are \u201caround 2.9m BN(O)s currently in Hong Kong\u201d who would be eligible for a BNO passport.<\/p>\n<p>A U.K. government spokesperson also confirmed that the offer extended to the children and dependents of BNO citizens.<\/p>\n<p>China responded angrily to the original offer to passport holders. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-52842303\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">According to the BBC,<\/a> foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said: \u201cAll such BNO passport holders are Chinese nationals and if the U.K. insists on changing this practice it will not only violate its own stance but also international law<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/uk-sets-out-hong-kong-path-to-citizenship-plan\/?utm_source=RSS_Feed&amp;utm_medium=RSS&amp;utm_campaign=RSS_Syndication\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More \u2013 Source<\/a><br \/>\n[contf]<br \/>\n[contfnew]<br \/>\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/snap.md\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/politico-logo.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">politico<\/a><\/h5>\n<p>[contfnewc]<br \/>\n[contfnewc]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON \u2014 The U.K.s plan to offer a \u201cpath to citizenship\u201d for British Nationals Overseas in Hong Kong..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":150080,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[202],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-150079","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
