{"id":149665,"date":"2020-05-19T06:41:24","date_gmt":"2020-05-19T06:41:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/us-sticks-it-to-who-as-xi-offers-vaccine-hope\/"},"modified":"2020-05-19T06:41:24","modified_gmt":"2020-05-19T06:41:24","slug":"us-sticks-it-to-who-as-xi-offers-vaccine-hope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/us-sticks-it-to-who-as-xi-offers-vaccine-hope\/","title":{"rendered":"US sticks it to WHO as Xi offers vaccine hope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Global fault lines over the coronavirus response were laid bare as the U.S. ripped into China and the World Health Organization at the U.N. health bodys annual assembly on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said the WHO \u201cfailed at its core mission\u201d \u2014 and that \u201cat least one member country\u201d ignored its transparency obligations, an apparent reference to China.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing, meanwhile, hewed closer to the WHO and Europe as Chinese President Xi Jinping endorsed the principle of making any vaccine produced in his country globally accessible.<\/p>\n<p>That announcement leaves the U.S. in an increasingly isolated position at the WHO, where it remains the biggest funder pending President Donald Trumps decision to suspend payments.<\/p>\n<p>In a video message to the World Health Assembly, Azar echoed Trumps critique, citing \u201ca failure by this organization to obtain the information that the world needed\u201d as one of the \u201cprimary reasons this outbreak spun out of control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn an apparent attempt to conceal this outbreak, at least one member state made a mockery of their transparency obligations, with tremendous costs for the entire world,\u201d he said, blaming Beijing without naming it.<\/p>\n<h3>Post-mortem terms<\/h3>\n<p>Xi expressed openness to a WHO-led inquiry into the pandemic on Monday, backing \u201cthe idea of a comprehensive review of the global response to COVID-19 after it is brought under control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/gb\/ebwha\/pdf_files\/WHA73\/A73_CONF1-en.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coronavirus response resolution<\/a> on track to be adopted on Tuesday by WHO member countries calls for the WHO chief to launch a review of the response, including the global bodys actions, \u201cat the earliest appropriate moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus endorsed the idea Monday and pledged to initiate it.<\/p>\n<p>Azar also embraced an inquiry, but with a barb, calling the status quo \u201cintolerable\u201d and saying the Geneva-based institution needs to be \u201cfar more transparent and far more accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough we are all focused on the immediate response, we need a more effective WHO right now,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Azar didnt address Trumps moves to defund the agency, nor did Tedros.<\/p>\n<p>However, Tedros noted that reviews of previous epidemics prompted new measures or committees to drive the global response. This time, he continued, \u201cthe world doesnt need another plan, another system, another mechanism, another committee or another organization. It needs to strengthen, implement and finance the systems and organizations it has \u2013 including WHO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Top European leaders invited by Tedros to help open the virtual assembly, including French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, voiced support for the WHO. It also got backing from Xi, who called on the \u201cinternational community to increase political and financial support to WHO.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Equal access<\/h3>\n<p>Xi took steps to align China with European efforts by declaring any coronavirus vaccine developed there would be a \u201cglobal public good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China has some of the leading candidates in the global race for an immunization, with four already in human trials.
