{"id":144071,"date":"2020-05-09T08:22:53","date_gmt":"2020-05-09T08:22:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/supreme-court-grants-request-to-temporarily-block-release-of-mueller-grand-jury-documents\/"},"modified":"2020-05-09T08:22:53","modified_gmt":"2020-05-09T08:22:53","slug":"supreme-court-grants-request-to-temporarily-block-release-of-mueller-grand-jury-documents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/supreme-court-grants-request-to-temporarily-block-release-of-mueller-grand-jury-documents\/","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court Grants Request to Temporarily Block Release of Mueller Grand Jury Documents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court on Friday has granted the Trump administrations request to temporarily block the release of grand jury materials from former special counsel Robert Muellers Russia investigation to the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<p>The order (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/orders\/courtorders\/050820zr_097c.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pdf<\/a>), which was signed by Chief Justice John Roberts, shields the documents from being handed over to the Democratic-led House Judiciary Committee temporarily while the court considers a Trump administration application for a longer delay. The court gave the House committee until 3 p.m. on May 18 to file a response to that application.<\/p>\n<p>The application, which was filed on Thursday, asks for a temporary stay of a lower courts order that grants the House committee access to grand jury information redacted from Muellers 448-page report, including transcripts or exhibits referenced in the redactions. That order is set to take effect on May 11.<\/p>\n<p>The administration also asked the Supreme Court for an administrative stay on the order while the court considers this application.<\/p>\n<p>Solicitor General Noel Francisco wrote in his brief to the top court on Thursday that the administration will be filing an appeal of the circuit courts decision and asks the justices to temporarily block the release of the documents from the House until after theyve had time to consider that petition.<\/p>\n<p>Francisco argued (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/19\/19A1035\/143052\/20200507112632872_19A__%20DOJ%20v.%20HJC%20stay%20appl.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pdf<\/a>) that letting the order to take effect on May 11 would \u201cirrevocably lift their secrecy and possibly frustrate the governments ability to seek further review.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The main question in the present case is whether an impeachment trial is a judicial proceeding. Grand jury materials are usually guarded with great secrecy and are only disclosed under exceptional circumstances.
