Former United Kingdom Prime Minister Tony Blair has a message for U.S. President Donald Trump and other Western leaders as they grapple with the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a POLITICO online event on Wednesday, Blair urged governments to resist the pull of nationalism amid the crisis, calling the current debates between \u201cglobalizers and non-globalizers\u201d a distraction and urging countries to focus on practical cooperation to defeat COVID-19.<\/p>\n

But Blair, who along with former U.S. President George W. Bush bucked the United Nations when invading Iraq last decade, acknowledged that few international organizations are up to the task.<\/p>\n

The United Nations Security Council is \u201cnot really representative of the world today,\u201d said Blair, who now leads the nonprofit Institute for Global Change,<\/a> which he founded in 2016.<\/p>\n

He acknowledged the World Health Organization (WHO) \u2014 which Trump has accused of being complicit with China in covering up the virus \u2014 needs to streamline its bureaucracy. But Blair said member countries should agree to give the organization \u201cmuch greater heft and weight.\u201d Otherwise, its \u201cunfair to criticize them\u201d for following the limited mission set out for them by national governments.<\/p>\n

According to Blair, the G20, an economic forum for 19 nations, the European Union and their central bankers, is \u201cthe only short-term practical way\u201d to achieve global cooperation.<\/p>\n

That kind of cooperation cant be achieved without buy-in from China. And Blair said Western governments need to recognize that Beijings new \u201cdominant position\u201d in the world means there will be both areas of \u201cgenuine confrontation\u201d alongside an unavoidable need for partnership on issues like climate change and public health.<\/p>\n

He urged the Trump administration to act \u201cstrategically\u201d regarding the U.S.-China relationship, criticizing \u201ca series of ad-hoc reactions of a transactional nature.\u201d The days of framing the relationship in terms of individual issues like the coronavirus pandemic or Huawei technology \u201care over,\u201d Blair said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to understand China from the Chinese point of view,\u201d he continued, describing Chinese people as proud and \u201cby their nature nationalistic.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he said China also needs to be \u201ca predictable and responsible partner\u201d given the \u201cmassive economic interconnections\u201d between China and the rest of the world. And the Chinese government has \u201cserious questions to answer about the origins of this [coronavirus] crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n
