BERLIN \u2014 German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced further moves<\/a> Wednesday to ease lockdown restrictions, shifting more responsibility to the countrys 16 federal states.<\/p>\n

Social distancing \u2014 of at least 1.5 metres \u2014 will continue until June 5, but people will be allowed to meet in public with those from \u201cone other household,\u201d Merkel said. All shops are allowed to reopen, with a focus on hygiene and controlled access, avoiding queuing.<\/p>\n

Schools will continue to ease back to some normality, with all pupils expected to be back in class before the summer holidays.<\/p>\n

Germanys football season<\/a> is scheduled to resume \u201cfrom the second half of May,\u201d Merkel said, with the top two professional leagues playing behind closed doors.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have the very first phase of the pandemic behind us, but \u2026 we have a long struggle with the virus ahead of us,\u201d Merkel said after a conference call with the 16 state leaders.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis will be a huge challenge,\u201d the chancellor added, saying everyone \u201cneeds to remain careful.\u201d Merkel stressed it was important \u201cto continue taking snapshots\u201d and to regularly re-evaluate the situation.<\/p>\n
