U.S. President Donald Trump claimed on Sunday that a coronavirus vaccine would be ready by the end of 2020 and returned to touting an unproven treatment for the disease \u2014 on both fronts contradicting his own health officials as well as companies developing and testing potential vaccines.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe think well have a vaccine by the end of this year and were pushing very hard,\u201d he said at a Fox News town hall at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. \u201cWere building supply lines, we even have the final vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that several pharmaceutical companies are \u201cclose\u201d to developing the vaccine, naming Johnson & Johnson in particular.<\/p>\n

All vaccines currently in development are still in the early phases of clinical trials, and Johnson & Johnson has said the soonest its first batch will be available is in 2021. The company has not yet begun human trials, and doesnt expect to do so until September of this year.<\/p>\n

Pfizer and the German company BioNTech, however, say they have the potential to supply millions of doses by the end of 2020 if their vaccine candidate shows promising results in trials.<\/p>\n

Vaccines often take several years to develop, and for some infectious diseases, including HIV and Ebola, they remain elusive.<\/p>\n

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, recently said<\/a> its \u201cwithin the realm of possibility\u201d to have a vaccine widely available by January, but only if drug companies are willing to assume the risk of beginning to ramp up production of the vaccine before it is fully tested and approved.<\/p>\n

Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response coordinator, told Fox News on Sunday morning that \u201con paper its possible\u201d to have a vaccine available in January but \u201cwhether we can execute and execute around the globe\u201d is still in question.<\/p>\n

Trump on Sunday evening said he wasnt concerned about which country develops a vaccine first. \u201cI just want to get a vaccine that works. I really dont care. If its another country, Ill take my hat off to them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But if another country beats the U.S. to the finish line in developing a vaccine, many are worried<\/a> that Trumps withdrawal from international cooperation efforts \u2014 including his recent move to strip funding from the World Health Organization \u2014 will limit Americas access to the cure.<\/p>\n

Trump acknowledged Sunday that his vaccine timeline may go beyond what his own experts have advised, but insisted on his optimistic timeline.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe doctors would say, well, you shouldnt say that. Ill say what I think,\u201d he said. \u201cI met with the heads of the big companies, these are great companies. I think were going to have a vaccine much sooner than later.\u201d<\/p>\n

Further complicating the vaccine push, the Trump administrations agency in charge of vaccine development has seen turmoil in recent weeks, with the ousted director claiming he was pushed out for raising concerns about the presidents embrace of unproven drugs.<\/p>\n

In his town hall on Sunday, Trump also returned to promoting those drugs for malaria \u2014 hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine \u2014 as a coronavirus treatment even though his<\/p>\n
